Physical Interpretations of the Instabilities Encountered in the Deflection Equations of the Unconstrained Pipeline

Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1974
For a pipeline modeled as having constant rigidity, horizontal tension, and submerged weight per unit length, there is a maximum value that the maximum sag-bend moment attains as the distance from the pin-supported end of the pipe to the sea floor increases.

Quantifying the optical sensitivity of planar Bragg gratings in glass micro-cantilevers to physical deflection

Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, 2011
Here we introduce a novel technique for characterizing the deflection and force sensitivity of a silica micro-cantilever transducer, with inherently defined planar Bragg gratings. The technique uses a 3D scanning surface profiler to deform the micro-cantilever both vertically and horizontally whilst simultaneously monitoring a set of multiplexed Bragg ...

The physical mechanisms of plasma directional deflection in cross-coupled arc

Physics of Fluids
Cross-coupled arcs (CCAs), as a novel heat source, enable decoupled control of heat and mass transfer, offering significant potential in metal processing applications such as additive manufacturing, welding, and surface treatment. To ascertain the primary cause of the main-arc deflection in the CCA, numerical models of the double-wire plasma arc (DW-PA)

Large deflection analysis of functionally graded reinforced sandwich beams with auxetic core using physics-informed neural network

open access: yesMechanics Based Design of Structures and Machines
This paper aims to investigate the large deflection behavior of a sandwich beam reinforced with functionally graded (FG) graphene platelets (GPL) together with an auxetic core, rested on a nonlinear elastic foundation.

Determination of the thermal physical properties of ceramics and parameters of cracks by a laser optical-beam deflection Method

Technical Physics, 2001
A formation model for optical-beam deflection signals in ceramics is constructed. The generation of temperature waves by laser radiation in ceramics with regard for the anisotropy of their thermal physical properties is considered. The thermal physical parameters of silicon nitride ceramic are measured with a laser optical-beam deflection method.

Physical optics in low-symmetry ferroelastics I Intensity losses and dichroism caused by deflection

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2002
The optical discontinuities located at domain walls in low-symmetry ferroelastics are responsible for the light-deflection phenomenon and for subsequent impairments of the intensity, the phase coherence, and the polarization of the direct beam transmitted through the domain structure. Here, intensity losses are studied.

A new physical model for empirical fiber snubbing effect in cementitious composites based on large deflection beam theory

Cement and Concrete Composites, 2019
Abstract A single fiber crosses a crack in Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composites (SHCC) can be either perpendicular or inclined to the crack surface. When the single fiber pullout test is performed on inclined polymeric fibers, the peak pull-out load is commonly observed to increase with the inclination angle.

Poly (α‐methylstyrene‐styrene‐acrylonitrile) as a heat deflection additive for PVC: Physical and rheological properties

Journal of Vinyl and Additive Technology, 1998
Abstract Poly(α‐methylstyrene‐styrene‐acrylonitrile) (AMSAN) is an additive used to improve the heat deflection temperature of PVC. The effect of its addition on the HDT of a typical injection molding formulation is studied. Other physical properties like impact strength, yield strength, modulus of elasticity, and viscosity are also ...

Viscoelastic analysis of creep response for uniaxially-compressed laminates with initial deflection including the effect of physical aging

International Journal of Solids and Structures, 1998
We examine the viscoelastic behavior of simply-supported, cross-ply and angle-ply laminated plates with a physical aging phenomenon. The laminates considered are under uniaxial in-plane compression and have various amplitudes of initial imperfection, The analysis is based on a geometrically nonlinear viscoelastic formulation.
