Intensity and timing of defoliation on white cultivar Chasselas under the temperate climate of Switzerland

open access: yesOENO One, 2018
Aim: The objective of this work is to investigate the effects of early defoliation on cv. Chasselas under the temperate conditions of Switzerland, with particular attention to berry anatomical traits and wine sensory parameters.

STUDY OF DEFOLIATION INTENSITY AND NITROGEN RATE EFFECTS ON YIELD, YIELD COMPONENTS AND GERMINATION TRAITS OF PRODUCED SEED IN WHEAT (Triticum aestivum)

open access: yesAgricultura, 2013
A field experiment and a laboratory experiment were conducted in 2011-2012 to determine the effect of defoliation intensity and nitrogen rate on yield, yield components and seed germination of wheat (Triticum aestivum).

Birch Leaves as a Minefield: Do Trichomes Mediate Neonate Caterpillar Site Selection?

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We investigated whether neonate Drepana arcuata caterpillars select leaf sites based on trichome distribution. Specifically, we assessed where larvae establish on leaves, quantified trichome distribution on leaves, and tested whether neonates avoid leaf trichomes. Neonates preferentially established and fed on areas with fewer trichomes, especially the

Does the munch affect the bunch? Using community science to explore insect herbivory and fruit production in an understory plant

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
We used iNaturalist records, a longitudinal field survey, and a simulated herbivory experiment to explore how insect herbivory factors are associated with Cornus canadensis fruit production. Naturally observed internal and external insect herbivory was mostly low intensity and did not have a strong relationship with fruit production.

Spatio-temporal modelling of forest monitoring data: modelling German tree defoliation data collected between 1989 and 2015 for trend estimation and survey grid examination using GAMMs

open access: yesiForest - Biogeosciences and Forestry, 2019
Spatio-temporal modelling of tree defoliation data from the German forest condition survey is statistically challenging, particularly due to irregular grids. In the present study, generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) were used to estimate the spatio-

Fly me to the canopy: Diptera communities in oak forest crowns as bioindicators of stand decline

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, EarlyView.
Diptera diversity: Oak decline increases the overall Diptera diversity, particularly in saproxylic and floricolous guilds, likely due to more open canopies and greater deadwood and floral resource availability. Family responses: Dolichopodidae, Empididae, Hybotidae and Anthomyiidae thrive in declining stands, whereas Mycetophilidae and other fungus ...

Genome assembly of Elcysma westwoodi provides insights into host‐plant cyanogenic glucoside detoxification and chemical defence gene evolution

open access: yesInsect Molecular Biology, EarlyView.
A chromosome‐level genome of Elcysma westwoodi was assembled. The genome encodes 272 detoxification‐related genes. A single‐copy bCAS was retained for cyanide detoxification. CYP405A and CYP332A were recruited into cyanogenic defence evolution. UGT33A retained a conserved GT‐B fold and catalytic domains.
