The functional role of ants in no‐till cropping systems

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Ants provide valuable ecosystem services in tropical agriculture, but their roles in temperate row crops remain poorly understood. Conservation practices such as no‐till farming and cover cropping support ant communities that contribute to pest suppression, weed seed removal, and soil quality, which can increase crop productivity.

Leaf defoliation and Tabernaemontana rotensis (Asterids: Gentianales: Apocynaceae) flower induction and fruit development

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2023
Tabernaemontana rotensis (Kaneh.) P.T. Li is an attractive small tree that is endemic to the islands of Guam and Rota. Conservation efforts of the threatened population are constrained by lack of research.

Controlled incubation, leachate, and pot assays of shrimp shell‐based compost for suppressing Verticillium dahliae in olive

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Shrimp shell compost suppresses Verticillium dahliae microsclerotia, enhances chitinase activity, lowers olive wilt severity and improves plant recovery under controlled conditions. Abstract BACKGROUND Verticillium wilt of olive (Olea europaea L.), caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb., is difficult to manage because long‐lived microsclerotia persist in

Partial defoliation of Brachypodium distachyon plants grown in petri dishes under low light increases P and other nutrient levels concomitantly with transcriptional changes in the roots [PDF]

open access: yesPeerJ, 2019
Background There have been few studies on the partial defoliation response of grass. It has been unclear how partial defoliation may affect roots at the levels of nutrient accumulation and transcriptional regulation.

Absorption and translocation of 14C‐propiconazole associated with two adjuvants in young coffee plants

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Experimental workflow evaluating 14C‐propiconazole absorption and translocation in Coffea arabica with two biodegradable adjuvants, quantified at six post‐application time points using radioscanner and liquid scintillation spectrometry. Abstract BACKGROUND This study evaluated the absorption, translocation and distribution of 14C‐propiconazole applied ...

Critical impact of defoliation on garlic yield during key developmental stages [PDF]

open access: yesPesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of defoliation levels at different growth stages of garlic plants on total and marketable yields. The experiments were conducted during two crop seasons, when five dates (30, 60, 90, 110, and 130 days

Persistence of seed‐applied pesticides in soybeans: environmental influences and implications for crop protection

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Early soybean planting in cool, wet soils slows emergence and results in about half the insecticide and fungicide concentrations at vegetative emergence compared with standard planting, where faster emergence maintains roughly double the pesticide concentrations, yet pesticide persistence remains similar across both planting dates.

Ground‐based robotic remote sensing for standardized biodiversity monitoring in coastal habitats

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Illustrated workflow of the proposed citizen‐to‐robot monitoring pipeline: (i) expert‐validated citizen observations are translated into AI models, (ii) deployed on a ground‐based robotic platform for proximal sensing of coastal dune habitats, (iii) enabling standardized detection of ecological targets (e.g., Pancratium maritimum & Brithys crini), and (

Cotton Farming Pesticides Affect Ileal Microbiota Activity and Expression of Virulome but Not Resistome or Metabolic Pathways in a Sedentary Wild Passerine

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The increased use of agrochemicals to enhance crop production has had detrimental environmental effects including implication in the sharp decline of North American farmland‐breeding birds. Here, using a combination of deep shotgun metatranscriptomics and pesticide exposure data, we sought to assess whether exposure to cotton (Gossypium spp ...

Concentration of Potassium, Magnesium, and Iron of Brachiaria humidicola (Rendle Schweick) at Various Cultivation Methods and Defoliation Intervals

open access: yesAnimal Production: Indonesian Journal of Animal Production, 2006
The existence of weeds significantly decreases the rate of production and quality of herbage.  Physical weed control by defoliation could be expected to sustain quality and production of herbage, and is able to control weeds expansion.
