Short-term plant community responses to warming and defoliation in a northern temperate grassland

open access: yes, 2011
: Little is known about the short-term impacts of warming on native plant community dynamics in the northern Canadian prairies. This study examined the immediate effects of elevated temperature and defoliation on plant community diversity, composition ...

Offspring performance does not explain oviposition preference in the leafminer Stigmella sorbi (Lepidoptera: Nepticulidae): a tri‐trophic perspective

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
We studied oviposition site selection in a leaf‐mining moth (Stigmella sorbi) on rowan trees (Sorbus aucuparia) in northwestern Russia, assessing larval performance across different shoot types, leaf positions, and leaflets. Larval survival was highest on long vegetative shoots, yet females showed no preference for these optimal sites.

Neonicotinoid seed treatments do not consistently reduce insect feeding damage nor increase yields in Maryland soy

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
We compared soybean plants from untreated and treated seeds across 4 sites and 3 years in Maryland. Neonicotinoid seed treatments (NST) provided little reduction in insect stippling damage and no reduction in chewing damage. NST did not result in increased plant biomass or bean yield. Abstract The use of neonicotinoid insecticides in seed treatments in

Fruit quality and production of Vitis vinifera L. Chardonnay affected by partial defoliation in tropical highlands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Using a completely randomized design with twotreatments (50% defoliation and a control without defoliation)and six replications per treatment, the fruit quality and productionof grape plants subjected to early partial-defoliation in Villa deLeyva ...

Status of ash (Fraxinus spp.) in mixed hardwood post‐outbreak forests near the epicentre of the emerald ash borer invasion

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
The persistence and health of ash populations were characterized in post‐outbreak forests near the epicentre of the emerald ash borer (EAB) invasion in North America. Regenerating ash remained abundant, but densities of understory ash were higher in wetlands (hydric), while ash remained at the seedling stage in riparian (mesic) and upland (xeric ...

Defoliation percentage in two soybean cultivars at different growth stages

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental, 2015
The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic variables due to the effects of different levels of defoliation in the phenological phases of two soybean cultivars. The experiment was conducted during the 2011/2012 season, in a randomized block

Environmental Stress Effects on Vigor, Mortality, and Growth in Northern Hardwood Forests Along a Pollution-Climate Gradient

open access: yes, 1998
Concern exists over the effects of interacting environmental stresses on the ecological integrity of temperate forests. Coincidence of sensitivity to drought, increasing occurrence of defoliation, and elevated pollutant deposition has produced ...

Soybean response to weed interference and defoliation

open access: yes, 1999
Field experiments were conducted in Louisiana over 2 yr to evaluate the influence of full-season interference from johnsongrass, common cocklebur, or hemp sesbania at densities of 2.5, 0.5, and 2.0 plants m-1 of row, respectively, and simulated insect ...

Effects of Invasive Winter Moth Defoliation on Tree Radial Growth in Eastern Massachusetts, USA

open access: yesInsects, 2014
Winter moth, Operophtera brumata L. (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), has been defoliating hardwood trees in eastern Massachusetts since the 1990s. Native to Europe, winter moth has also been detected in Rhode Island, Connecticut, eastern Long Island (NY), New
