In central Ukraine, the migratory butterfly Vanessa cardui emerged as a key pest of organic soybean during its outbreaks in 2019 and 2022. Despite early defoliation, crops recovered strongly due to high parasitism by Cotesia vestalis, reaching 100% in some fields.

BackgroundHerbivore grazing is a multiple-component process that includes wounding, defoliation, and saliva deposition. Despite the extensive published research on mechanical wounding and defoliation, no analysis to identify the genes that specify ...

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown in North Carolina requires intensive management for achieving optimal yields in an early-season environment. Recent increases in production costs require cotton producers to adopt practices that allow yield potential

Induced changes in root carbohydrate pools are commonly assumed to determine plant defoliation tolerance to herbivores. However, the regulation and species specificity of these two traits are not well understood.

Mechanical yield regulation in winegrapes: comparison of early defoliation and crop thinning [PDF]
Background and Aims: Winter pruning and manual bunch thinning are the primary methods for crop regulation in viticulture. Recently, innovative mechanical approaches have been proposed as cost-effective for yield management.

The investigations evaluated the performance of the native parasitoid Exorista larvarum (L.) on last instar Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) larvae, using the factitious host Galleria mellonella (L.) as a control. Laboratory bioassays were conducted using no‐choice and choice (1:1 and 5:5) experimental designs.

A new method for evaluating damage caused by tenthredinids to Norway spruce stands is based on defoliation of the top whorls. A scale with four classes of defoliation was established that is easy to use. Defoliation can be displayed graphically on a grid

Phenolic composition of Tempranillo wines following early defoliation of the vines
Background: Early defoliation is a viticultural practice aimed at crop control. So far, the impact of early leaf removal on the monomeric phenolic composition of wines has not been explored.

We used iNaturalist records, a longitudinal field survey, and a simulated herbivory experiment to explore how insect herbivory factors are associated with Cornus canadensis fruit production. Naturally observed internal and external insect herbivory was mostly low intensity and did not have a strong relationship with fruit production.
