Balancing tracks and trees: Assessing railroad impact on Brazilian biodiversity

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The Brazilian West–East Integration Railway (FIOL) aims to boost the national economy by improving commodity transport; however, it crosses three of Brazil's most biodiverse and fragile regions: the Caatinga, Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. Using digitised plant records and land‐use analyses, our study reveals significant vegetation loss within the ...

Development and adoption of Kernza—A perennial grain crop for sustainable agriculture

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Annual cereal grains account for ~50% of human food calories, but cultivation of these crops has resulted in major environmental and social issues worldwide. For nearly three decades, researchers have been breeding intermediate wheatgrass—a perennial cool‐season grass—to serve as the world's first commercial‐scale perennial grain crop to improve ...

Meteorological conditions leading to a catastrophic, rain‐induced landslide in Cameroon in October 2019

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
October 2019 was characterized by three main multiday wet spells in Bafoussam and Dschang. Our results indicated that wet spells were influenced by a vortex pair near the Gulf of Guinea, a strong Sahara Heat Low located anomalously far east and north, a northward shift of the intertropical discontinuity, an enhancement of the inland penetration of the ...

Long‐Term Effects of Low‐Drop Grade Control Structures on Channel Evolution in the Yazoo River Basin

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Channel incision is a widespread problem, especially in river basins that have an extensive history of channel alterations. Because channel incision causes large ecological and economic consequences, the prevention of continued migration of headcuts, defined as a steep change in stream gradient over a short reach, has been the focus of many ...

Wall‐to‐wall Amazon forest height mapping with Planet NICFI, Aerial LiDAR, and a U‐Net regression model

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
Tree canopy height is a key indicator of forest biomass and structure, yet accurate mapping across the Amazon remains challenging. Here, we generated a canopy height map of the Amazon forest at ~4.8 m resolution using Planet NICFI imagery and a deep learning U‐Net model trained with airborne LiDAR data.
