Wind-induced deformations in a segmented mirror [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2002
A Zernike expansion of wind-induced deformations in a segmented mirror is described. The wind model is a frozen turbulent field with a Kolmogorov spectrum for scales smaller than the outer scale and a flat spectrum for scales larger than the outer scale.

High-contrast imager for Complex Aperture Telescopes (HiCAT): 1. Testbed design [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Searching for nearby habitable worlds with direct imaging and spectroscopy will require a telescope large enough to provide angular resolution and sensitivity to planets around a significant sample of stars.

Eco‐Fabricated Nanowave‐Textured Implants Drive Microtubule‐Assisted Nuclear Mechanotransduction and Chromatin Modification: Biophysical Priming for Osteogenesis and Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Eco‐friendly nanowave‐textured implants produced via femtosecond laser fabrication enhance bone regeneration by orchestrating a precise mechanotransduction cascade. This nanotopography directs mesenchymal stem cell alignment and cytoskeletal organization, triggering changes in nuclear shape and chromatin acetylation that prime cells for osteogenesis ...

Self‐Powered Real‐Time Temperature Sensing Based on Flexible Ionic Elastomer on Triboelectric Nanogenerators

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a self‐powered real‐time ionic TENG temperature sensing system for flexible thermal management with high and real‐time temperature monitoring. Ionic liquids and elastomer chains are investigated under temperature via electrochemical and physical analysis, resulting in enhancing thermal sensitivity and output performance on TENG ...

A Universal Biomimetic Approach for Making Artificial Antigen‐Presenting Cells for T Cell Activation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows a biomimetic silica microcapsule (SMC) fabrication method under mild conditions for making artificial antigen‐presenting cells (aAPCs). Inspired by marine biomineralization, peptide‐mediated biosilicification enables silica shell formation on emulsion templates. The resulting SMCs possess a core–shell structure, controlled fluorescence

Distributed control of large deformable mirrors [PDF]

open access: yesSPIE Proceedings, 2012
While it is attractive to integrate a deformable mirror (DM) for adaptive optics (AO) into the telescope itself rather than using relay optics within an instrument, the resulting large DM can be expensive, particularly for extremely large telescopes. A low-cost approach for building a large DM is to use voice-coil actuators, and rely on feedback from ...

Comprehensive Si Anode Design for Sulfide‐Based all‐Solid‐State Batteries: Insights into Si‐Electrolyte Synergy for Mitigating Contact Loss

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Silicon anodes in sulfide‐based all‐solid‐state batteries suffer from interfacial instability caused by volumetric fluctuations and contact degradation, restricting their practical implementation despite high capacity. This study presents design strategies that leverage controlled active material expansion and an elastic recoverable anolyte to form an ...

Active Control of Laser Wavefronts in Atom Interferometers

open access: yes, 2017
Wavefront aberrations are identified as a major limitation in quantum sensors. They are today the main contribution in the uncertainty budget of best cold atom interferometers based on two-photon laser beam splitters, and constitute an important limit ...

Highly Sensitive Cuffless Blood Pressure Monitoring with Selective Laser‐Sintered Liquid Metal Conductors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A soft, compact, and cuffless system for continuous blood pressure monitoring using laser‐sintered liquid metal conductors is developed. The stretchability and sensitivity of the device enable real‐time, non‐invasive tracking of blood pressure, including recovery after exercise. This wearable device offers a practical solution for managing hypertension
