Atmospheric turbulence causes refractive index fluctuations, which in turn introduce extra distortions to the wavefront of the propagated radiation. It ultimately degrades telescope resolution (in imaging applications) and reduces radiation power density

Distributed actuator deformable mirror [PDF]
In this paper we present a Deformable Mirror (DM) based on the continuous voltage distribution over a resistive layer. This DM can correct the low order aberrations (defocus, astigmatism, coma and spherical aberration) using three electrodes with nine contacts leading to an ideal device for sensorless applications. We present a mathematical description

Active optics: deformable mirrors with a minimum number of actuators [PDF]
We present two concepts of deformable mirror to compensate for first order optical aberrations. Deformation systems are designed using both elasticity theory and Finite Element Analysis in order to minimize the number of actuators.

To acquire images with higher accuracy of wide-field telescopes, deformable mirrors with more than 100 actuators are used, making the telescope alignment more complex and time-consuming.

Amplitude Zone Plate in Adaptive Optics: Proposal of the Principle
One of the main elements in hardware-based adaptive optics systems is a deformable mirror. There is quite a large number of such mirrors based on different principles and exhibiting varying performance.

Active Optics–Freeform Segment Mirror Replications from a Deformable Matrix
We present a new active optics method for making smooth aspheric, or freeform, mirrors by replication technique from an elastically deformable matrix.

Stroke amplifier for deformable mirrors [PDF]
We demonstrate a simple optical configuration that amplifies the usable stroke of a deformable mirror. By arranging for the wavefront to traverse the deformable mirror more than once, we correct it more than once. The experimental implementation of the idea demonstrates a doubling of 2.0 and 2.04 by two different means.

A direct comparison between a MEMS deformable mirror and a liquid crystal spatial light modulator in signal-based wavefront sensing [PDF]
Aberrations degrade the performance of optical systems in terms of resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. This work explores the feasibility of a signal-based wavefront sensor, which employs a search algorithm to estimate Zernike coefficients of given ...
