Suppressing low-order eigenmodes with local control for deformable mirrors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
To improve the mechanical characteristics of actively controlled continuous faceplate deformable mirrors in adaptive optics, a strategy for reducing crosstalk between adjacent actuators and for suppressing low-order eigenmodes is proposed.

Terahertz adaptive optics with a deformable mirror [PDF]

open access: yesOptics Letters, 2018
We report on the wavefront correction of a terahertz (THz) beam using adaptive optics, which requires both a wavefront sensor that is able to sense the optical aberrations, as well as a wavefront corrector. The wavefront sensor relies on a direct 2D electro-optic imaging system composed of a ZnTe crystal and a CMOS camera.

A Lorentz Force Actuated Continuous Deformable Polymer Mirror for Wavefront Control

open access: yesProceedings, 2017
This paper describes MEMS deformable polymer mirror system for adaptive optics application. This system employs a 4 µm thick SU-8 membrane with a stress balanced double side aluminum coating as a mirror element.

Recent Developments in (0,2) Mirror Symmetry [PDF]

open access: yesSIGMA 8 (2012), 068, 28 pages, 2012
Mirror symmetry of the type II string has a beautiful generalization to the heterotic string. This generalization, known as (0,2) mirror symmetry, is a field still largely in its infancy. We describe recent developments including the ideas behind quantum sheaf cohomology, the mirror map for deformations of (2,2) mirrors, the construction of mirror ...

Active Optics in Astronomy: Freeform Mirror for the MESSIER Telescope Proposal

open access: yesMathematical and Computational Applications, 2018
Active optics techniques in astronomy provide high imaging quality. This paper is dedicated to highly deformable active optics that can generate non-axisymmetric aspheric surfaces—or freeform surfaces—by use of a minimum number of actuators ...

A Mirror Theorem for the Mirror Quintic [PDF]

open access: yesGeom. Topol. 18 (2014) 1437-1483, 2012
The celebrated Mirror Theorem states that the genus zero part of the A model (quantum cohomology, rational curves counting) of the Fermat quintic threefold is equivalent to the B model (complex deformation, variation of Hodge structure) of its mirror dual orbifold. In this article, we establish a mirror-dual statement.

Ultrafast laser stress figuring for accurate deformation of thin mirrors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Fabricating freeform mirrors relies on accurate optical figuring processes capable of arbitrarily modifying low-spatial frequency height without creating higher-spatial frequency errors. We present a scalable process to accurately figure thin mirrors using stress generated by a focused ultrafast laser.

A Design Study on Adaptive Primaries for 1-2 Meter Class Telescopes [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Adaptive optics (AO) offers an opportunity to stabilize an image and maximize the spatial resolution achievable by ground based telescopes by removing the distortions due to the atmosphere. Typically, the deformable mirror in an AO system is integrated into the optical path between the secondary mirror and science instrument; in some cases, the ...

A Design Approach to Reducing Stress and Distortion Caused by Adhesive Assembly in Micromachined Deformable Mirrors

open access: yesMicromachines, 2023
A common problem in deformable mirror assembly is that the adhesion of actuators to an optical mirror face sheet introduces unwanted topography due to large local stresses generated at the adhesive joint.

Deformable Mirrors developments at ESO [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Already several deformable mirrors are in use at Paranal and more will come in the next years. With the next generation and telescope and associated instruments, adaptive optics become an integrated part of the telescope and provide as such the first layer of image correction.
