A hierarchical framework for the recognition of complex deformable shapes is developed. In extension to traditional approaches an additional layer of control is introduced to guide the local search for subshapes. This is realized by incorporating knowledge about their spatial relationships.

No.02CH37292), 2003We describe techniques for automatically acquiring observations of a deforming object and for estimating a model of the deformation from these observations. A robotic system was developed for measuring deformation, and has been previously reported (Pai et al., 2000, 2001).
