Data Mining to Investigate the Meteorological Drivers for Extreme Ground Level Ozone Events [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
This project aims to explore which combinations of meteorological conditions are associated with extreme ground level ozone conditions. Our approach focuses only on the tail by optimizing the tail dependence between the ozone response and functions of meteorological covariates. Since there is a long list of possible meteorological covariates, the space

Disturbance and ecosystem management interact to shape reptile body condition

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Fires, invasive species and droughts are key drivers of global biodiversity declines. Yet, we lack an understanding of how threats and their management interact to impact native wildlife. Here, we present the first research investigating the interactive effects of these three major threats on reptiles.

Using synthetic farm data to estimate individual nitrate leaching levels

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract This article delineates a synthetic population generation scheme in an attempt to estimate individual nitrate leaching rates among Greek farms in the region of Thessaly. The proposed scheme relies upon the construction of a Bayesian network describing farming activities in the region, which, coupled with the use of nonparametric regression ...

Cost‐benefit analysis to provide decision criteria: A case study of municipalities in Japan

open access: yesAnnals of Public and Cooperative Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract This study explores the use of cost‐benefit analysis (CBA) as a decision‐making tool by deriving boundary values that distinguish positive and negative policy outcomes. While traditional CBA relies on fully quantifiable inputs, this approach focuses on providing reference values for uncertain variables, using CO2 emission reductions as an ...

Ribbed moraines formed during deglaciation of the Icelandic Ice Sheet: implications for ice‐stream dynamics

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
This study focuses on the deglaciation dynamics in the northeastern sector of the Iceland Ice Sheet, by investigating transverse ridges, together with glacifluvial and ice‐marginal landforms. The main emphasis is on the transverse ridges, which are primarily interpreted as ribbed moraines – the first to be described in Iceland.

GMG: A Video Prediction Method Based on Global Focus and Motion Guided [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Recent years, weather forecasting has gained significant attention. However, accurately predicting weather remains a challenge due to the rapid variability of meteorological data and potential teleconnections. Current spatiotemporal forecasting models primarily rely on convolution operations or sliding windows for feature extraction.

Lords of the flies: dipteran migrants are diverse, abundant and ecologically important

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Insect migrants are hugely abundant, with recent studies identifying the megadiverse order Diptera as the major component of many migratory assemblages. Despite this, their migratory behaviour has been widely overlooked in favour of more ‘charismatic’ migrant insects such as butterflies, dragonflies, and moths.

VortexTransformer: End‐to‐End Objective Vortex Detection in 2D Unsteady Flow Using Transformers

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract Vortex structures play a pivotal role in understanding complex fluid dynamics, yet defining them rigorously remains challenging. One hard criterion is that a vortex detector must be objective, i.e., it needs to be indifferent to reference frame transformations.

The relationships between PM2.5 and meteorological factors in China: Seasonal and regional variations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
The interactions between PM2.5 and meteorological factors play a crucial role in air pollution analysis. However, previous studies that have researched the relationships between PM2.5 concentration and meteorological conditions have been mainly confined to a certain city or district, and the correlation over the whole of China remains unclear.

Effects of a temperate heatwave on diel rhythms of insect activity: A comparison across habitats

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Counts of insects caught in pan traps in Norfolk, UK, exhibited a unimodal relationship with air temperature – a pattern also observed specifically for the orders Diptera and Hymenoptera. A temperate heatwave event reduced insect counts in the open meadow habitat by an estimated 81.9%, with smaller, non‐significant decreases observed in tree‐covered ...
