Adaptive deformation correction of depth from defocus for object reconstruction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The accuracy of three-dimensional object reconstruction using depth from defocus (DfD) can be severely reduced by elliptical lens deformation. This paper presents two correction methods, correction by deformation cancellation (CDC) and correction by ...

Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.

Measuring and modelling deformation during the Dabbahu (Afar) rifting episode [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In September 2005, a 60-km-long dyke intruded the Dabbahu segment of the Nubia-Arabia plate boundary (Afar, Ethiopia), marking the beginning of an ongoing rifting episode.

Experimental Characterization of Mycelium‐Based Composites Under Multiple Loading Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the mechanical response of mycelium‐based composites under compression, shear, and tension using mechanical testing and imaging methods. The comparison between unpressed and hot‐pressed specimens shows that hot pressing is associated with higher compression and shear stiffnesses.

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Uncalibrated perspective reconstruction of deformable structures [PDF]

open access: yesTenth IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV'05) Volume 1, 2005
Reconstruction of 3D structures from uncalibrated image sequences has a wealthy history. Most work has been focused on rigid objects or static scenes. This paper studies the problem of perspective reconstruction of deformable structures such as dynamic scenes from an uncalibrated image sequence. The task requires decomposing the image measurements into

Repairing triangle meshes built from scanned point cloud [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
The Reverse Engineering process consists of a succession of operations that aim at creating a digital representation of a physical model. The reconstructed geometric model is often a triangle mesh built from a point cloud acquired with a scanner ...

Control of Polarization and Polar Helicity in BiFeO3 by Epitaxial Strain and Interfacial Chemistry

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In BiFeO3 thin films, the interplay of interfacial chemistry, electrostatics, and epitaxial strain is engineered to stabilize homohelicity in polarization textures at the domain scale. The synergistic use of a Bi2O2‐terminated Aurivillius buffer layer and a highly anisotropic compressive epitaxial strain offers new routes to control the polar‐texture ...
