Giants in the cold: Morphological evidence for vascular heat retention in the viscera but not the skeletal muscle of the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Fewer than 50 of the over 30,000 extant species of fishes have developed anatomical specializations facilitating endothermy in specific body regions. The plankton‐feeding basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), traditionally classified as an ectotherm, was recently shown to have regionally endothermic traits such as centralized red muscle (RM ...

Experimental Study of the Characteristic of Composite Defrosting for Heat Pump Air Conditioner of Electric Vehicle

open access: yesZhileng xuebao, 2017
To solve the problem that frosting leads to lower efficiency of the heat pump air conditioner for electric vehicle in the heating process, a new method of composite defrosting is proposed after analyzing the deficiency of the existing defrosting method ...

Shedding light on the parasite communities and diet of the deep‐sea shark Deania profundorum (Smith & Radcliffe, 1912) (Squaliform: Centrophoridae) from the Avilés Canyon (southern Bay of Biscay)

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Deep‐sea elasmobranchs are less resilient to the increasing scale of anthropogenic impacts such as fisheries, owing to their life‐history traits. The necessity for proper management measures is hampered by the scant knowledge on these taxa and their biology. Here we provide the first comprehensive insight into the parasite infracommunities and

Why advanced buildings don't work? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The intent of policy is to achieve robust comfortable low energy buildings. However there are obvious policy disconnects and, where there is evidence, it appears that in general advanced buildings do not achieve their intended performance. There are many

The wide gape of snakes: A comparison of the developing mandibular symphysis in sauropsids

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Our analysis explores the adaptations at the mandibular symphysis required to allow extreme lower jaw mobility in macrostomate snakes taking a comparative approach. Abstract The origin and evolution of snakes has been marked by the acquisition of many morphological and functional novelties, one of which is the possession of a highly kinetic skull ...

IA method for measuring the amount of hoar frost formation in the recuperation channels of ventilation systems using the adjustable mathematical model of this process

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2017
The paper presents a method for measuring the amount of hoar frost formation in the recuperation channels of ventilation systems using the adjustable mathematical model of the hoar frost process. The principle is based on the fact that the contour of the

The Efficacy of Food‐Grade Substances to Protect Dietary Glutamine From Ruminal Degradation

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the use of four, low cost, food‐grade substances to protect glutamine from microbial degradation in vitro, and subsequently validate their efficacy in vivo. Two in vitro trials were conducted using 250 mL bottles replicated in triplicate to test beeswax‐, paraffin wax‐, zein‐, and rice bran wax ...

Performance analysis of air source heat pumps using detailed simulations and comparison to field trial data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The take-up of heat pump technologies in the UK domestic sector has lagged far behind other countries in Europe and North America due primarily to the ready availability of cheap natural gas; this has led to the predominance of gas central heating ...

Complex demographic, developmental, fitness, and physiological responses of larval eastern hellbenders to elevated water conductivity

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Here we explore the effects of elevated water conductivity on larval eastern hellbenders (Cryptobranchus a. alleganiensis), both lethal and sublethal. We found that elevated water conductivity significantly impacts both survival and morphology, though it has limited effects on locomotor performance, stress physiology, and oxidative stress.
