Analysis of retrofit air source heat pump performance : results from detailed simulations and comparison to field trial data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In the UK, gas boilers are the predominant energy source for heating in housing, due primarily to the ready availability of natural gas. The take-up of heat pumps has lagged far behind Europe and North America.

Biodegradable and Recyclable Luminescent Mixed‐Matrix‐Membranes, Hydrogels, and Cryogels based on Nanoscale Metal‐Organic Frameworks and Biopolymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents biodegradable and recyclable mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs), hydrogels, and cryogels using luminescent nanoscale metal‐organic frameworks (nMOFs) and biopolymers. These bio‐nMOF‐MMMs combine europium‐based nMOFs as probes for the status of the materials with the biopolymers agar and gelatine and present alternatives to conventional ...

Experimental Study on Effect of Reverse Cycle Defrost on the Performance of Screw Refrigeration Compressor

open access: yesZhileng xuebao, 2014
Twin-screw refrigeration compressor has been widely applied because of its unique advantage in air-source heat pump. In this paper, the performance variation of the twin-screw refrigeration compressor during the reverse cycle defrost process has been ...

4D‐Printed Magneto‐Plasmonic Microrobots for Programmable Spatiotemporal De‐Icing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A 4D‐printing strategy is introduced to achieve programmable de‐icing devices. By aligning gold–magnetite nanofillers within a photosensitive resin, the printed structures exhibit dual magnetic and plasmonic functionalities, enabling precise spatio‐temporal ice removal through thermoplasmonic effects.

Mitochondria‐Specific Protein Delivery by Protease‐Triggered Release in Plants with Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Polymer‐coated carbon nanotubes were engineered as protease‐responsive nanocarriers for protein delivery in intact plants. GFP cargo can be released by cytosolic phytaspase cleavage and subsequently targeted to mitochondria via an N‐terminal sequence, enabling controlled intracellular protein delivery without tissue damage and demonstrating stable ...

The performance of an ASHP system using waste air to recover heat energy in a subway system [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
In this short communication, we demonstrate that the performance of a typical air source heat pump (ASHP), exploiting a relatively stable air temperature within a subway environment, is high, even during the peak heating months.

Transparent Photothermal Slippery Surface Based on Monolayer Self‐Assembled MXene Film for Anti‐Fogging and De‐Icing

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The ultrathin (2.5 nm) MXene film self‐assembled at liquid interfaces breaks the trade‐off between transparency (82.5 %) and photothermal conversion effect (DT∼25.1°C ± 2.9 °C) under 100 mW cm−2. After encapsulated by a slippery surface with low adhesion, this transparent film can be applied in smart windows, eyewear, and optical sensors to autonomous ...

Inflaton Fragmentation and Oscillon Formation in Three Dimensions

open access: yes, 2010
Analytical arguments suggest that a large class of scalar field potentials permit the existence of oscillons -- pseudo-stable, non-topological solitons -- in three spatial dimensions.

Electrostatic Defrosting

open access: yesSmall Methods
Abstract Electrification of ice has been studied for over half a century, mostly in the context of atmospheric science. Here, the polarizability and natural thermovoltage of a substrate‐bound frost sheet are exploited for frost removal by placing an actively charged electrode overhead.
