Concepts embraced by the term coherence have been identified as central to fields such as quantum physics, physiology, and social science. There are different types of coherence, although the term always implies a harmonious relationship, correlations ...

Invariant degrees of coherence of partially polarized light
The spatio-temporal properties of partially polarized light are analyzed in order to separate partial polarization and partial coherence. For that purpose we introduce useful invariance properties which allow one to characterize intrinsic properties of the optical light independently of the particular experimental conditions. This approach leads to new

Optical Coherence Tomography for Examination of Parchment Degradation
A novel application of Optical Coherence Tomography utilizing infrared light of 830 nm central wavelength for non invasive examination of the structure of parchment, some covered with iron gall ink, is presented.

Walter the Banker: The Conjunction Fallacy Reconsidered [PDF]
In a famous experiment by Tversky and Kahneman (1983), featuring Linda the bank teller, the participants assign a higher probability to a conjunction of propositions than to one of the conjuncts, thereby seemingly committing a probabilistic fallacy.

Polarization diffractive elements analyzed with the Fourier transform Jones matrix and with the beam coherence polarization matrix [PDF]
We analyze polarization diffractive elements with the Fourier transform Jones (FTJ) matrix integrated with the beam coherence-polarization (BCP) matrix.

Some theorems on the unimodular complex degree of optical coherence
The complex degree of coherence γ(r1, r2, t1 -t2) of a stationary optical field is defined as the normalized cross-correlation function (|γ| ≤ 1) of the light disturbances at two space-time points (r1, t1), (r2, t2), the disturbances ...

Coherence properties of supercontinuum quantified by complex degree of self-coherence
The complex degree of self-coherence is introduced to quantify the coherence of supercontinuum generated by the same long pulse, and experiments are performed. The coherence properties of supercontinuum generated in the photonic crystal fiber pumped by 700 ps pulse are measured using the Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Temporal coherence among tropical coastal lagoons: a search for patterns and mechanisms
Temporal coherence (i.e., the degree of synchronicity of a given variable among ecological units within a predefined space) has been shown for several limnological features among temperate lakes, allowing predictions about the structure and function of ...

Algal bloom phenomenon was defined as "the rapid growth of one or more phytoplankton species which leads to a rapid increase in the biomass of phytoplankton", yet most estimates of temporal coherence are based on yearly or monthly sampling frequencies ...
