Recognizing true H5N1 infections in humans during confirmed outbreaks. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
INTRODUCTION: The goal of this study was to evaluate whether any characteristics that are evident at presentation for urgent medical attention could be used to differentiate cases of H5N1 in the absence of viral testing.

Recycling End‐of‐Life Solid Oxide Cell Interconnect Assemblies into Commercial‐Grade AISI 304 Stainless Steels

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
This study validates a recycling pathway for converting interconnect assemblies from end‐of‐life SOC stacks into commercial‐grade AISI 304 steels. Using scrap‐based steelmaking operations, austenitic cast steels with <4.0% δ‐ferrite are successfully produced.

The biophysical economic structure of four developed countries: Lessons for decarbonization

open access: yesJournal of Industrial Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study provides a comparative analysis of the biophysical economic structures of four developed economies—Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. We draw upon results from input–output models to map and analyze capital, energy, and carbon relationships in each economy.

X-ray Scattering Halos from the Galactic Center: Implications for Diffuse Emission Around SgrA*

open access: yes, 2003
We consider the absorption and scattering of X-rays observed from the Galactic center. One objective is to characterize the intrinsic X-ray emission from the central black hole, SgrA*, in its quiescent and flaring states.

A Template Analysis of Intimate Partner Violence Survivors’ Experiences of Animal Maltreatment: Implications for Safety Planning and Intervention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This study explores the intersection of intimate partner violence (IPV) and animal cruelty in an ethnically diverse sample of 103 pet-owning IPV survivors recruited from community-based domestic violence programs. Template analysis revealed five themes: (

Slow and unequal reduction in Austrian household GHG footprints between 2000 and 2020

open access: yesJournal of Industrial Ecology, EarlyView.
Abstract Understanding the trends and distribution of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions embodied in household consumption is pivotal to developing climate‐change mitigation strategies that are just and effective. While household GHG footprints inequality is increasingly investigated, less is known about its temporal dynamics across product groups. For the

Development of a Model for Predicting the Thermophysical Properties of Carbon Materials and Proposal of Manufacturing Conditions Using the Model

open access: yesAnalytical Science Advances, Volume 6, Issue 2, December 2025.
ABSTRACT A steelmaking method using electric furnaces is attracting attention in the iron and steel industry, and a carbon material called needle coke is used as an aggregate for the electrode in electric steelmaking. The performance of needle coke as an aggregate for electrodes in steelmaking is greatly affected by the quality of the needle coke ...

Circulating levels of reactive oxygen species in patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy and the influence of antioxidant supplementation: 6-month follow-up [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The aim was to evaluate circulating levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and changes in central macular thickness (CMT) in patients with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) after antioxidant supplementation.

Investigation of liquid distribution in gas–solid fluidized beds for fluid cokers

open access: yesThe Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 103, Issue 8, Page 3983-3998, August 2025.
Abstract Thermal cracking processes convert larger molecules into smaller, more valuable products, without a catalyst, allowing for transforming residual oils or waste plastics into useful compounds. Fluid coking, a thermal cracking process utilizing a fluidized bed of hot particles, processes approximately 1 million barrels of residual oil daily. This
