Influence of dispersion properties of the delay line in self heterodyne linewidth measurements

OFC 2001. Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibit. Technical Digest Postconference Edition (IEEE Cat. 01CH37171), 2001
We report experimental results of the influence of 1/f noise on the laser linewidth measurements using the self heterodyne technique and suggest a method of isolating it from the dispersive broadening caused by the delay line in the interferometer.

Laser frequency noise characterization by self-heterodyne with both long and short delay

Applied Optics, 2019
We propose a novel approach to laser frequency noise characterization by delayed self-heterodyne. Compared with the traditional treatment, our method applies to both long and short delay, corresponding to uncorrelated and correlated self-heterodyne. In the case of long delay, it overcomes the influence of 1/f noise on the intrinsic linewidth extraction

Accurate time-delay measurement of optical delay components based on frequency-shifted self-heterodyne spectrum

Semiconductor Lasers and Applications VIII, 2018
An electrical method is proposed for the absolute time-delay characterization of optical delay components based on the frequency-shifted self-heterodyning. The method utilizes the electrical spectrum of the heterodyne products between the delayed optical signal and the frequency-shifted optical carrier, and achieves the intrinsic absolute time-delay ...

Delayed Self Heterodyne Linewidth Measurement of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser Diodes

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe, 1996
Recently, record low linewidths of 30 MHz have been reported for proton-implanted vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diodes (VCSELs) [1]. However, the value obtained was near the resolution limit of the available Scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, thus underlining the need for a more refined measurement technique.

A Lorentzian narrow-linewidth demodulation scheme based on a short fiber delayed self-heterodyne technique

Applied Physics Express, 2022
Abstract We propose a narrow-linewidth demodulation method which utilizes a short-fiber-delayed self-heterodyne structure and coherent envelope spectral properties to restore the Lorentzian line shape of the laser output. The Lorentzian spectrum obtained using our scheme is consistent with that obtained using a traditional long-delay ...

Improved Frequency Shifting Realization for the Delayed Self-Heterodyne Interferometric Linewidth Measurement

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
A new implementation of frequency shifting for the delayed self-heterodyne interferometer (DSHI) is proposed in this paper. In order to avoid the costly and complicated acoustic-optic modulator to shift frequency in the DSHI, we propose that a phase modulator can be used instead.

Delayed Self-Heterodyne Test of a Dispersive Semiconductor Laser Field

Journal of Lightwave Technology, 2012
Beat-note power spectral density (PSD) of a dispersive semiconductor laser field in the delayed self-heterodyne test is derived by combining the effect of fiber's chromatic dispersion with differential time delay, taking laser's intensity noise (IN) into account, and assuming standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) as an optical channel. This generalized PSD,

Michelson Interferometer With Faraday Mirrors Employed In A Delayed Self-Heterodyne Interferometer

Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2011, 2011
Faraday rotator mirrors in a Michelson interferometer configuration is shown to significantly improve resolution and coherence for delayed self-heterodyne interferometery. Coherence is clearly observed over the maximum available delay length of 60 km.

Laser Linewidth Measurements Using Self-Heterodyne Detection with Total-Reflected Delay Line

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
As an important parameter in the laser communication system, the narrow linewidth of tunable laser source (TLS) must be measured accurately. Therefore, the linewidth of a TLS was measured with the delayed self-heterodyne detection method in the present work.

Simple technique for improving the resolution of the delayed self-heterodyne method

Optics Letters, 1990
A new technique is proposed and demonstrated for improving the resolution of the delayed self-heterodyne method for laser spectral linewidth measurement. The delay time between two laser beams is increased by the use of multipass transmission in an optical fiber ring interferometer containing a frequency shifter.
