Bayesian estimation of laser linewidth from delayed self-heterodyne measurements

open access: yes, 2023
We present a statistical inference approach to estimate the frequency noise characteristics of ultra-narrow linewidth lasers from delayed self-heterodyne beat note measurements using Bayesian inference. Particular emphasis is on estimation of the intrinsic (Lorentzian) laser linewidth.

Coherence Cloning Using Semiconductor Laser Optical Phase-Lock Loops [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We demonstrate the concept of coherence cloning where the coherence properties of a high-quality spectrally stabilized fiber laser are transferred to a commercially available high-power DFB semiconductor laser (SCL) using an optical phase-lock loop.

High-speed photodetector characterisation by delayed self-heterodyne method

open access: yesElectronics Letters, 1989
An improved single-laser heterodyning technique for measuring the frequency response of high-speed photodetectors is described. Experimental results up to 22 GHz are presented, and the accuracy and limitations of frequency response measurements made by this method are discussed.

Coherent optical binary polarisation shift keying heterodyne system in the free-space optical turbulence channel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In this paper, analytical and simulation results for the bit error rate (BER) performance and fading penalty of a coherent optical binary polarization shift keying (2PolSK) heterodyne system adopted for a free space optical (FSO) communication link ...

Numerical investigation of a feed-forward linewidth reduction scheme using a mode-locked laser model of reduced complexity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We provide numerical verification of a feed-forward, heterodyne-based phase noise reduction scheme using single-sideband modulation that obviates the need for optical filtering at the output.

Baseband Radio over Fiber Aided Millimeter-Wave Distributed Antenna for Optical/Wireless Integration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
A Baseband Radio Over Fiber (BROF) architecture is proposed, where upto four Radio Frequency (RF) carriers can be generated, while using the heterodyne photo-detection of only two optical signals. This proposed BROF architecture has a star-like structure

Implementation of a loss-compensated recirculating delayed self-heterodyne interferometer for ultranarrow laser linewidth measurement [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2006
Ultranarrow laser linewidth measurement using an optimized loss- compensated recirculating delayed self-heterodyne interferometer is described. An experimental setup is constructed to measure subkilohertz laser linewidths. The system parameters are optimized to obtain the best beat signals.
