Investigation of lateralization of socio-sexual behavior in belugas (Delphinapterus leucas)
Behavioural Processes, 2022The majority of cetacean research suggests a right side/left cerebral hemisphere bias for processing visuospatial information and a left side/right cerebral hemisphere bias for processing social information. Beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) socio-sexual behavior involves motor skills coordination and is also hypothesized to serve a social function.

An adult male beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas leucas) was presented with a 4-cm-diameter, raised, firm nodule on the medial aspect of the left pectoral fin. A fissure developed within the center of the nodule, which formed an ulcerated cyst-like lesion.

Mandibular Layering in Delphinapterus leucas and Age Determination
Nature, 1969LAWS1 investigated mandibular periosteal layers as an aid to ageing the Sperm whale Physeter catodon. Continued studies of P. catodon indicate that mandibular layers and tooth layers occur in equal numbers2, and it has been postulated that two tooth layers are deposited annually3. Two tooth and one mandibular layer in Delphinus delphis are annual4.

Nucleotide sequence of the p53 cDNA of beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas)
Gene, 2002The cDNA (DNA complementary to RNA) of the p53 gene of the beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) was sequenced by the method of 5'- and 3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) with the cDNA made for the RNA obtained from fresh peripheral blood leukocytes isolated from two animals.

A microscopic investigation of the lymphoid organs of the beluga, Delphinapterus leucas
Journal of Morphology, 1993AbstractLymphoid organs from belugas, Delphinapterus leucas, ranging in age from less than one to 16 years, were harvested during a sanctioned hunt to investigate morphology. The spleen is divisible into red and white pulp and a stroma consisting of a reticular network, a collagenous capsule, and trabeculae containing smooth muscle bundles.

Herpes-like Viral Dermatitis in a Beluga Whale (Delphinapterus leucas)
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1989Approximately 3.5 mo following its capture, a beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) developed focal pale gray skin lesions. These lesions persisted for at least 8 mo. A biopsy from one of these sites revealed epithelial intranuclear inclusions. Herpes-like viral particles were seen by transmission electron microscopy.

Bubbleblow in beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas): a play activity?
Behavioural Processes, 1997In Odontocetes, bubbleblow is reported in several ethograms but its function is poorly understood. For the five captive beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) of the Vancouver Public Aquarium, we recorded the occurrence of this behaviour, its diurnal pattern and individual variability.

Occurrence of butyltin compounds in beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas)
Applied Organometallic Chemistry, 1998Fifty-two beluga whale samples (Six liver samples, and 46 blubber samples including ones from different depths of the fat layer) from the St Lawrence River, Canada, were analyzed for butyltin compounds (mono-, di-, and tri-butyltin) with a view to investigating the occurrence and contamination of butyltin in these animals.
