Adults Play but Not Like Their Young: The Frequency and Types of Play by Belugas (Delphinapterus leucas) in Human Care [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Behavior and Cognition, 2014
While play occurs in many taxa with younger conspecifics engaging in play behaviors more often than older conspecifics, little empirical research currently exists on play by white whales, or belugas, (Delphinapterus leucas).

River-influenced beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) summer habitat use in western Hudson Bay, Canada

open access: yesArctic Science, 2023
River estuaries along western Hudson Bay, Canada, are important summer habitats for beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucus (Pallas, 1776)) and subject to increasing industrial development activities including vessel traffic. The feasibility of establishing

Polar bear attack on a juvenile narwhal

open access: yesFauna Norvegica, 1990
A juvenile female narwhal Monodon monoceros landed at Pond Inlet had several sets of scratches on the posterior part of the body. They were probably made by a polar bear Ursus maritimus in the course of an unsuccessful attack.

Population dynamics of the threatened Cumberland Sound beluga (Delphinapterus leucas) population

open access: yesArctic Science, 2021
Current scientific evidence indicates that the threatened Cumberland Sound beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas, 1776)) population is genetically differentiated and spatially segregated from other beluga whale populations. This population has been

Social-ecological changes and implications for understanding the declining beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) harvest in Aklavik, Northwest Territories

open access: yesArctic Science, 2020
Subsistence is the basis for food access for Inuvialuit in the western Canadian Arctic and has strong economic, dietary, and cultural importance. Inuvialuit harvest beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas (Pallas, 1776)) from the eastern Beaufort beluga ...

Description of respiratory rhythm for white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in captivity

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО, 2016
Parameters of external respiration are considered for white whales Delphinapterus leucas living in captivity on the observations in 2009-2012. Low respiration rate (on average 2.2 ± 0.3 breath per minute) and short apnea phase (no more than 1.7 minutes ...

Tumors in St. Lawrence Beluga Whales (Delphinapterus leucas) [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Pathology, 1994
A population of 450–500 belugas ( Delphinapterus leucas) resides in the polluted estuary of the St. Lawrence River. Stranded carcasses of this endangered population were recovered and necropsied. High concentrations of organochlorines, heavy metals, and benzo-a-pyrene exposure were demonstrated in tissues of these whales.

The respiratory microbiota of three cohabiting beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) under human care

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
We sampled the respiratory mucus from voluntary blowhole exhalations (“blow”) of three healthy beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) under professional human care. Blow samples were collected from three resident belugas, one adult male (M1) and two adult
