Intraspecific variation of cochlear morphology in bowhead and beluga whales
Abstract The bony labyrinth of the petrosal bone, a distinctive feature of mammal skulls, is often identified in micro‐computed tomography imaging to infer species' physiological and ecological traits. When done as part of a comparative study, one individual specimen is normally considered representative of a species, and intraspecific variation is ...

ABSTRACT Understanding the diversity of our oceans is fundamental now more than ever as climate change and human activities put increasing pressure on marine species and ecosystems. Beaked whales (family Ziphiidae) are among the most poorly understood marine mammals, in part due to their affinity to offshore underwater canyons and prolonged diving ...

Feces DNA analyses track the rehabilitation of a free-ranging beluga whale
Following the sudden appearance, and subsequent efforts to support the survival of a beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) speculated to have been previously trained off the coast of Norway, we investigate the animal’s ability to readapt to life in the ...

Genetic and Ecological Divergence Between Northwest Atlantic Killer Whale Populations
Killer whale (Orcinus orca) populations exhibit substantial genetic, ecological, and morphological differences across their global distribution. In this study, we use whole‐genome resequencing and compound‐specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids to show concurrent genetic and ecological differentiation in two relatively understudied killer ...

Diving behaviour of adult male white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in Svalbard, Norway
White whales (Delphinapterus leucas) in Svalbard remain near the coast much of the year, spending most of their time in front of tidewater glaciers. In this article, the diving behaviour of adult male white whales in Svalbard (N = 16) is presented based ...

We compared the traditional two‐dimensional (2D: δ13C and δ15N) isotopic niches with a three‐dimensional (3D: δ13C, δ15N, and δ34S) framework to evaluate changes in niche size and overlap. Overall, invertebrates and benthic‐associated species showed greater changes in niche size and reduced overlap using the 3D approach.

Element concentrations in tissues reveal spatial structure of Atlantic walrus management stocks
Differences in tissue element concentrations confirm geographic differentiation between 2 of Canada's walrus management stocks but reveal additional spatial structure within the largest stock that may have management implications. Abstract Ensuring harvested animal populations are managed at appropriate scales requires an understanding of underlying ...

Choroid plexus papilloma in a beluga whale ( Delphinapterus leucas ) [PDF]
We report herein a choroid plexus papilloma in a beluga whale ( Delphinapterus leucas). This case was positive for choroid plexus tumor marker Kir7.1 on immunohistochemistry. These results and the high conservation of Kir7.1 across species at the amino acid sequence level strongly suggest that antibodies directed against Kir7.1 not only can be employed

Southampton Island hosts two distinct benthic sub‐webs, north and south. North is deeper, phytoplankton‐driven; South is shallower, more ice‐algae driven. North benthos: bottom‐up control, four trophic levels including apex predators. South benthos: walrus top‐down control, trophic truncation to three levels.
