Characterization of Spawning Behavior in Cultured Delta Smelt [PDF]
Abstract We examined cultured Delta Smelt Hypomesus transpacificus under laboratory settings to provide the first formal characterization of spawning behavior, which included the quantification of participants and diel spawning patterns.

Modeling Delta Smelt Distribution for Hypothesized Swimming Behaviors [PDF]
Delta Smelt, Hypomesus transpacificus, is an endangered pelagic fish native to the San Francisco Estuary. The distribution of Delta Smelt in the estuary shifts landward from low-salinity habitat to freshwater habitat before spawning. This spawning migration often coincides with the first substantial freshwater inflow to the estuary during winter.

Developmental Staging and Salinity Tolerance in Embryos of the Delta Smelt, Hypomesus transpacificus. [PDF]
Delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) is a critically endangered species endemic to the San Francisco Bay Delta (SFBD). Important for the conservation of this species is understanding the physiological and ecological impacts contributing to their population decline, and current studies lack information on embryonic development.

Liver Glycogen as a Sensitive Indicator of Food Limitation in Delta Smelt
Abstract Assessing habitat quality is a major goal of conservationists and restoration practitioners, but to associate habitat quality with biomarkers of vagile animals, the biomarkers must respond rapidly. Here, we identified a biomarker capable of rapidly detecting food limitation in the imperiled Delta Smelt (

Histopathological assessment of seven year-classes of Delta Smelt
The Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) is an imperiled, annual fish endemic to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and San Francisco Estuary. This study examined the severity and prevalence of liver and gill lesions of juvenile through adult Delta Smelt from 2011 through 2017 collected from five regions throughout its habitat (n = 1,053).

Delta Smelt and Water Politics in California
Abstract The Delta Smelt Hypomesus transpacificus is a small translucent fish that lives in the heart of California's water distribution system. It is an endemic species that is on verge of extinction, largely because it is in direct competition with people for water.

Foraging and metabolic consequences of semi-anadromy for an endangered estuarine fish. [PDF]
Diadromy affords fish access to productive ecosystems, increasing growth and ultimately fitness, but it is unclear whether these advantages persist for species migrating within highly altered habitat.

Investigation of Molecular Pathogen Screening Assays for Use in Delta Smelt
Pathogen surveillance must be part of any population supplementation or reintroduction program for the conservation of threatened and endangered species. The unintended transmission of pathogens can have devastating effects on these already at-risk populations or the natural ecosystem at large.
