We review scholarship that examines relationships - and distinctions - between religion and delusion. We begin by outlining and endorsing the position that both involve belief. Next, we present the prevailing psychiatric view that religious beliefs are not delusional if they are culturally accepted.

On the measurement of delusions
British Journal of Medical Psychology, 1990Garety (1985) analysed problems with existing definitions of delusions, focusing on the fixity and intensity of delusional beliefs. A quantitative method was proposed to evaluate with greater sensitivity the intensity of delusional conviction and its fixity over time.
