Development of a Low-Cost Automated Demand Response Controller for Home Energy Management

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This research focuses on developing a low-cost automated demand response controller (DRC) with OpenADR 2.0a capability to enable existing infrared-controlled (IR-controlled) air conditioners (ACs) in homes and buildings to participate in automated demand

Investigation into the impact of wind power generation on demand side management (DSM) practices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The construction of a number of wind farms in South Africa will lay the foundation for the country to embrace the generation of greener energy into the National Grid.

Colorectal cancer‐derived FGF19 is a metabolically active serum biomarker that exerts enteroendocrine effects on mouse liver

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

Targeted modulation of IGFL2‐AS1 reveals its translational potential in cervical adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cervical adenocarcinoma patients face worse outcomes than squamous cell carcinoma counterparts despite similar treatment. The identification of IGFL2‐AS1's differential expression provides a molecular basis for distinguishing these histotypes, paving the way for personalized therapies and improved survival in vulnerable populations globally.

The effect of Demand Response and wind generation on electricity investment and operation. ESRI WP577, December 2017 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We present a novel method of determining the contribution of load-shifting Demand Response (DR) to energy and reserve markets. We model DR in an Mixed Complementarity Problem (MCP) framework with high levels of wind penetration.

Dietary nitrate and nitrite protect against doxorubicin‐induced cardiac fibrosis and oxidative protein damage in tumor‐bearing mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapies such as doxorubicin can have toxic effects on healthy cardiovascular/heart tissue. Following up on a doxorubicin toxicity study in mice without tumors where nitrate water was cardioprotective (lessened toxicity), this study with tumor‐bearing mice undergoing doxorubicin treatment showed no negative effect of nitrate and nitrite on drug ...

SmallTalk: a novel small‐sized fusion tag for peptide expression and purification

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The SmallTalk fusion tag allows for the efficient expression and purification of soluble recombinant proteins or peptides in Escherichia coli. Testing with SmallTalk‐GFP confirmed that the proteins were soluble and folded correctly, while SmallTalk‐Bin1b maintained its antimicrobial activity against various bacterial isolates. This streamlined workflow

Naked cuticle is essential for Drosophila wing development beyond Wingless signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Naked cuticle (Nkd), a Wnt signaling inhibitor, assumes extensive roles in Drosophila wing development. Overexpressing Nkd causes smaller, crumpled wings, while also perturbing multiple signaling pathways and developmental genes. A specific region (R1S) is critical for Nkd's function as a signaling integrator, offering new insights for studying its ...

Establishment of a coculture system for Porphyromonas gingivalis and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using spheroid culture and LATS inhibition

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We established a spheroid coculture system enabling viable Porphyromonas gingivalis–HNSCC interactions under normoxic conditions. Inhibition of LATS1/2 maintains tumor cells in an undifferentiated state, which may promote spheroid growth and create a more permissive environment for bacterial persistence.
