This chapter reviews the concept of demand side management (DSM) programs, which aim to foster more responsible use of electrical energy. DSM encompasses both energy efficiency and demand response programs. Price-based and incentive-based DR (IB-DR) programs are discussed in detail in this chapter and practical examples are detailed.

The introduction of large tranches of renewable intermittent generation onto power systems has highlighted the need for mechanisms to profile demand to smooth and better match the renewable generation output to prevailing demand. It is envisaged that a proportion of the intermittency could be managed by regulating the demand side at the grid ...

A Bi-Level Framework for Supply and Demand Side Energy Management in an Islanded Microgrid
IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, 2023Time-varying electricity prices in demand response (DR) programs motivate users to change their consumption behavior with the aim of electricity bill cost minimization. Coordinated DR schemes aim to flatten the aggregate load profile and mitigate rebound

Demand Side Management in Smart Grid: A Dynamic-Price-Based Demand Response Model
IEEE transactions on engineering management, 2022Demand side management (DSM) is an important way to achieve smart energy management. Herein, a dynamic price (DP)-based demand response (DR) model is developed for DSM in smart grid.

Abstract This chapter describes demand side management, which is a method to better utilise the residual load by shifting consumption over time. The two basic methods, shifting loads and reducing loads, are described. Several examples show how schedules can be created to better use the residual load.
