The mobilisation of sediment by demersal otter trawls

Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2011
The mobilisation of sediment by towed demersal fishing gears has been related to the release of nutrients, benthic infaunal mortality and the resuspension of phytoplankton cysts and copepod eggs. Hence, to understand the broader environmental and ecological implications of demersal fishing, it is important to be able to estimate accurately the amount ...

Pineal organs in deep demersal fish

Cell and Tissue Research, 2002
We studied ten species of demersal fish from depths of 1500-4800 m, i.e. regions of the abyss outside the reach of sunlight. A pineal window in the skin and/or the skull, often found in mesopelagic fish, was never observed in demersal specimens. Nine species had a well-developed pineal organ, with light- and electron-microscopic features, well known in

The deepwater demersal ichthyofauna of the western Coral Sea

Zootaxa, 2014
The highly diverse deepwater demersal ichthyofauna of the western Coral Sea was first systematically surveyed in two exploratory voyages in 1985 and 1986, and these fish assemblages have not been investigated at the same level since. Only recently have catch data and specimens, obtained from these first voyages almost 3 decades ago, been rigorously ...

Brain Areas in Abyssal Demersal Fishes

Brain, Behavior and Evolution, 2001
Four areas of the brain which receive primary projections from chemical senses ([1] olfactory bulb, [2] gustatory area including facial and vagal lobes), the eye ([3] optic tectum), and mechanosensory, and-hair-cell based systems i.e. the lateral line, vestibular and auditory systems ([4] trigeminal and octavolateral regions) have been studied and ...

New Zealand Demersal Fish Assemblages

Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2002
Demersal fish assemblages in the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone were identified using presence–absence data from 19 215 bottom trawl tows made over a 37-year period. The dataset spanned latitudes 34–54°S and depths of 4–1500 m. A total of 123 taxa occurred in more than 1% of the tows (121 fish and 2 squid).

Demersal cephalopods of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia

Australian Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, 1994
Demersal trawl and dredge surveys of the Gulf of Carpentaria in the early summers of 1990 and 1991 provided the first comprehensive assessment of the cephalopod fauna of this shallow, tropical basin off northern Australia. Twenty-one taxa (comprising five loliginid squids, seven cuttlefishes, seven octopuses and two dumpling squids ...

Are Larvae of Demersal Fishes Plankton or Nekton?

2006
A pelagic larval stage is found in nearly all demersal marine teleost fishes, and it is during this pelagic stage that the geographic scale of dispersal is determined. Marine biologists have long made a simplifying assumption that behaviour of larvae--with the possible exception of vertical distribution--has negligible influence on larval dispersal ...
