Investigation of diamond biocompatible coatings for medical implants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Despite the advantages of diamond-like carbon fi lms that are used as wear-resistant coatings for implants, they may have a number of disadvantages such as the high level of internal tension, low adhesive durability and high sensitivity to environment ...

The kinetics of fluoride uptake by synthetic hydroxyapatite [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The kinetics of fluoride uptake by synthetic hydroxyapatite from aqueous solution has been studied. Experiments involved exposing 0.1 g of synthetic hydroxyapatite to 5 cm3 of sodium fluoride solution in the concentration range 100-1000 ppm fluoride and

Crop genotypic richness enhances biomass production and phosphorus acquisition in maize‐mycorrhiza symbiosis

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Our study tests how soil and plant biodiversity can enhance sustainability of crop production in Kenya. We tested whether mixtures of maize varieties performed better than monocultures and tested their response to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizal responsiveness differed significantly by maize variety, and genetic mixtures outperformed ...

Using MALDI‐FTICR Mass Spectrometry to Enhance ZooMS Identifications of Pleistocene Bone Fragments Showing Variable Collagen Preservation

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Rationale Recent advances in high‐throughput molecular analyses of collagen peptides, especially ZooMS (Zooarchaeology by Mass Spectrometry), have permitted breakthroughs in the analysis of archaeological material that is highly fragmented, a factor that hinders morphological identification.

The association between organic matter and clay minerals in carbonaceous chondrites [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
There is an established relationship between organic matter content and aqueous alteration processes [1,2]. However, the relationship between meteoritic organic matter and individual aqueously generated mineral matrix phases is poorly understood ...

Cellulose Acetate Fibers With Infiltrated ZnO Nanocrystals: Activation of Antibacterial Properties Against Acne vulgaris by Oxygen Plasma Treatment

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
We present biodegradable cellulose acetate fibers infiltrated with ZnO nanocrystals for Acne treatment. Fibers produced by centrifugal spinning were vapor‐phase infiltrated to contain uniform ZnO nanocrystals. Oxygen plasma treatment enhanced the fibers´ wettability.

Quantitative micro‐XRF combined with X‐ray imaging reveals correlations between Zn concentration and dentin tubule porosity across entire teeth

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
The combination of calibrated micro‐CT and quantitative micro‐XRF measurement facilitates the correlation of density and composition in the 3D macro‐structure of teeth. Zn concentration in dentin increases by a factor of 10 toward the pulp. Incidentally, the overall density decreases, showing an association between Zn and the dentin tissue porosity ...
