The Demography of Development

open access: yesThe European Journal of Development Research, 1991
This article on recent research on the demography of development, and the contribution of Francophone demographers to that research, cannot be started without evoking the memory of two French pioneers in the field, both of whom died recently just a few months apart; they are Jean Bourgeois-Pichat (1912-90) and Alfred Sauvy (1898-1990).

Inferring breeding phenology and reproductive success from the emergence of juveniles in population monitoring

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 7, July 2026.
Phenological shifts caused by climate change are increasingly documented in wild populations. These events may be inferred by examining changes in population abundance and age structure throughout the breeding season, often using citizen science. However, several gaps still limit optimal use of such data.

Spatial demography

open access: yes, 2021
Abstract Demographic methods can be used to study the spatial response of individuals and populations to current global changes. The first mechanism underlying range shifts is a change in the spatial distribution of births and deaths. The spatial regression of demographic rates with geostatistical and spatially explicit models documents ...

Density‐driven bottlenecks constrain restoration of macroalgal forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 7, July 2026.
This single‐species and single‐site experiment provides evidence that high‐density restoration strategies accelerate mortality, suppress growth and delay reproduction, whereas low‐density approaches promote faster demographic progression and resilience. Under the conditions tested here, focusing on growth and reproductive output, rather than maximising

When invasions go unnoticed: Public perception of the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii in Europe

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 6, Page 1957-1973, June 2026.
Abstract Biological invasions are a major driver of biodiversity loss, yet inconspicuous or “cryptic” species often escape detection and public awareness, limiting management responses. We investigated the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii, likely native to China and now present on six continents, through a 22‐month multilingual online survey

Monitoring African Megafauna in an Anthropogenic Landscape: A 15‐Year Case Study of the Vulnerable West African Giraffe

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 29, Issue 3, Page 235-248, June 2026.
We used pattern recognition software to correct misidentifications in a 15‐year photographic database of the last, vulnerable West African giraffe population in Niger. After revealing substantial methodological errors that had inflated population estimates by nearly 19%, we corrected individual encounter histories and applied capture‐mark‐recapture ...

The demography of menopause

open access: yesMaturitas, 1996
Menopause marks a time of dramatic hormonal and often social change for women. Both risk factors and health needs are likely to change as women pass through menopause. This paper examines the demographic characteristics of the world population of menopausal and post-menopausal women, and also examines the implication of menopause for mortality risks ...

On the Demography of Aging [PDF]

open access: yesDemography, 1980
This paper is concerned with the contributions of demography to gerontology or the demography of aging. The major interests of gerontological demographers and outstanding issues and problems are discussed in terms of the process of aging. Problems of definition of old age and aging are noted in terms of: 1) the lack of a universally acceptable ...

Perceived challenges and determinants of farmers' intentions to adopt digital tools and services: Insights from Ghana

open access: yesCanadian Geographies / Géographies canadiennes, Volume 70, Issue 3, Autumn / automne 2026.
Abstract Digitalization is increasingly promoted as a pathway for transforming smallholder agriculture in sub‐Saharan Africa; however, the adoption of digital farming tools and advisory services remains uneven. Drawing on cross‐sectional survey data from 1,565 smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana, this study examined the factors influencing farmers ...
