Abstract The dendroehronologist is concerned with the determination of dates of events and intervals of time by comparative studies of the sequence of growth-rings in trees and aged wood. Accuracy is obtained by cross comparison between trees and with established local, regional or areal chronologies.

During the first years of this century an astronomer, Dr A. E. Douglass, started a series of examinations of the annual increment in trees just south of Flagstaff, Arizona, to see if the cyclical nature of sun-spot appearances was reflected in tree growth, through their influence on climate.
