From 1979 to 1981, the number of ponderosa pines attacked by Dendroctonus valens LeConte was monitored in conjunction with a series of experiments on Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte. During these experiments, over 100 trees were baited with D. brevicomis pheromone.

AbstractWe developed microsatellite loci for the southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis). Twelve microsatellite loci were identified. Eight loci were polymorphic and sufficiently variable in 62 individuals (expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.707 to 0.880) to investigate population structure.

The biology of Dendroctonus punctatus LeConte was studied in white spruce, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, forests of boreal western North America and in the laboratory. Engelmann spruce, P. engelmannii (Parry) Engelmann, was not found to be infested in nature but was used successfully for rearing in the laboratory.

Preferential Attack by Dendroctonus terebrans on Pinus elliottii

Attacks of Dendroctonus terebrans (Olivier) on Pinus elliottii Engelm., were followed for about 3 years in northeast Florida. Monthly records were kept of the number of attacks on each living tree. The incidence of attack per category of tree was about 20 times greater on previously attacked trees than on those previously unattacked.

Biology of the Southwestern Pine Beetle, Dendroctonus barberi

This species is associated with 60% of the insectcaused losses annually in the ponderosa pine type in Arizona and New Mexico. There it has three generations a year. It flies and attacks green trees from early May to October, most intensely in late July and early August; its development from egg through adult requires 50 to 60 days in the summer months.
