Comprehensive Flood Impact Assessment Using NLP and BERT Deep Learning for Improved Impact Prediction and Disaster Management

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Floods are increasing both in frequency and magnitude across different parts of the world. Although technological advances have improved flood forecasting, our understanding of how floods affect communities remains limited. This study develops a multi‐stage framework, integrating Natural Language Processing and the Bidirectional Encoder ...

Depth‐Aware Global Calibration of SM2RAIN‐NWF Using Growing Neural Gas‐Derived Hydroclimatic Clusters Across Heterogeneous Soils

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 62, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Accurate rainfall information underpins land‐surface water budgets, extreme‐weather analyses, and climate‐model evaluation. Yet in many regions, rain gauge networks are sparse, making conventional calibration of bottom up rainfall products difficult. To address this, we propose a self calibration framework that removes the need for a dedicated

Street‐to‐Pipe Diagnosis of Compound Rain–Tailwater Flooding in a Coastal Combined Sewer System: Sewer Pre‐Filling and Outfall Throttling

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract Compound flooding in coastal cities occurs when heavy rainfall coincides with tide‐driven tailwater that reduces combined sewer system (CSS) discharge capacity, yet this coupling is rarely quantified from street to pipe scale. We develop a high‐resolution 1‐D/2‐D drainage–inundation model for Hoboken, New Jersey, calibrating the 1‐D drainage ...

Limited source–sink connections shape south‐western Pacific coral reef resilience under current and future warming

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 4, April 2026.
Our results demonstrate the importance of integrating connectivity into conservation planning by highlighting that the current marine protected area networks across the southwestern Pacific should be managed as an interconnected network rather than as isolated reserves.
