Our results demonstrate that soil nutrient‐based species selection is a prevalent driver of community assembly in tropical forests, a process mediated by key functional traits within the leaf and wood economics spectrum. Functional space size and its filling increase with soil nutrient concentration, whereas niche vacancy decreases.

In agreement with the LMFTS hypothesis, our results confirm that landscape modifications in regions undergoing high and long‐lasting deforestation greatly impoverish the functional composition and diversity of sapling communities. The shift from communities composed mainly by conservative attributes towards communities with a higher prevalence of ...

A free Plain Language Summary can be found within the Supporting Information of this article. Abstract Tropical tree species span a range of life‐history strategies within a fast–slow continuum. The position of a species within this continuum is thought to reflect a negative relationship between growth and storage, with fast‐growing species allocating ...

High functional diversity and functional redundancy from lowland to mid‐elevation tropical forests suggest that these ecosystems can be resilient to future disturbances. Our results indicate that the ability of high‐elevation forests may be particularly susceptible to climate change and increasing forest‐use intensity. For these high‐elevation forests,

A free Plain Language Summary can be found within the Supporting Information of this article. Abstract Forest regrowth following farmland (agriculture and pasture) abandonment has been positively associated with a number of processes including the regulation of hydrological cycling, the enhancement of soil functioning and an increase in forest ...

This paper shows the results of a laboratory phase for the determination of the 1limits of infrared thermography in detecting internal defects in wood and, furthermore, it analyses how the density of this material can influence the surface ...
