Investigation into the formation and susceptibility of Candida albicans biofilms and denture plaque in vitro.

open access: yes, 2005
Microbial biofilms are wide-spread in nature and the organisms within them are often able to cause acute and chronic human diseases. The nature of biofilms is complex and the organisms behave differently from their planktonic counterparts.

SDPR–STK38 axis controls the proliferation–differentiation balance in alveolar type II cells

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
The present study identifies SDPR as a pivotal regulator orchestrating the balance between proliferation and differentiation in alveolar type II (AT2) cells. In SDPR+/+ cells, SDPR binds to and inhibits STK38 activity, thereby sustaining GSK‐3β signaling functionality to promote cyclin D1 degradation and maintain cell cycle homeostasis.

Regional gas exchange evaluation during ex vivo lung perfusion in a swine model of localized lung dysfunction

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) allows the evaluation of lungs that do not meet standard transplantation criteria. Current procedures do not permit the identification of regional functional deficits. We investigated the feasibility of assessing lobar gas exchange during EVLP in a swine model.

Quantitative assessment of masticatory muscles based on skull muscle attachment areas in Carnivora

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Masticatory muscles are composed of the temporalis, masseter, and pterygoid muscles in mammals. Each muscle has a different origin on the skull and insertion on the mandible; thus, all masticatory muscles contract in different directions. Collecting in vivo data and directly measuring the masticatory muscles anatomically in various Carnivora ...

A perspective from the Mesozoic: Evolutionary changes of the mammalian skull and their influence on feeding efficiency and high‐frequency hearing

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The complex evolutionary history behind modern mammalian chewing performance and hearing function is a result of several changes in the entire skeletomuscular system of the skull and lower jaw. Lately, exciting multifunctional 3D analytical methods and kinematic simulations of feeding functions in both modern and fossil mammals and their ...

Analysis of Traumatic Bone Cyst of the Jaws: A Retrospective Study

open access: yes, 2019
Objective: Traumatic bone cysts (TBC) are rare in the jaws, and may be characterized by the presence of a cavity in bone with no epithelial lining. Clinically, TBC is asymptomatic and often discovered incidentally on routine radiographic examination. The
