Enhanced permeability of acid-etched or ground dental enamel
Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 1997Acid etching creates retentive microcraters on enamel surfaces. Designing of a partial denture often involves reshaping the supporting and retentive teeth by grinding the enamel. Unfortunately, both these procedures damage the enamel surface. In vivo such surface damage takes several months to recover. This study evaluated the effect of 1-minute etching,

To investigate the permeability of the dental enamel of erupted and unerupted human pre-molars and its variation with depth, we determined the resistivity of successive 100-μm-thick layers. The electrical resistance of halved tooth crowns at zero Hertz, which according to Scholberg et al.

Permeability of human dental enamel to acriflavine and potassium fluoride
Archives of Oral Biology, 1971Abstract Permeability of human dental enamel was studied by following the penetration of acriflavine and potassium fluoride when applied to the surface of the teeth either in vitro or in vivo. Using ultraviolet microscopy to follow the penetration of acriflavine, and the increased resistance to acid etching to follow fluoride penetration, the ...

Effect of X-Ray Irradiation on the Permeability of Bovine Dental Enamel
Caries Research, 2009To estimate permeability properties of bovine dental enamel, complex impedance measurements and radioisotope diffusion experiments were carried out before and after X-ray irradiation (single dose, 72 Gy) of enamel specimens. Neither impedance measurements nor diffusion experiments showed significant changes in permeability.

Effect of various aliphatic amines on the permeability of bovine dental enamel
Archives of Oral Biology, 1986Aliphatic amines with chain lengths from C2 to C18 were investigated for their effect on the diffusion of [3H]-sorbitol, [14C]-glycerol, 36Cl- and 86Rb+. Before amine application, enamel was pretreated with a phytate solution. C12-C18 amines reduced the rate of diffusion to values of about 20-30 per cent of the values found before treatment.

Subsurface Demineralization in Dental Enamel and Other Permeable Solids During Acid Dissolution
Journal of Dental Research, 1992Subsurface demineralization of dental enamel during acid dissolution has been reported many times, but its cause remains obscure. At first, the phenomenon was thought to result from the physical structure of enamel. More recent studies have shown that subsurface demineralization occurs in other permeable solids, indicating that there must be more ...

Clinical procedures, such as acid etching and reshaping of the teeth supporting removable partial dentures by grinding off some enamel surface, increase the permeability of dental enamel. Teeth take several months in vivo to partially recover from such damage. In the meantime, the tooth is more susceptible to carious decay.

In 14 dogs aged 6 months with severe fluorosis, the authors studied the effects of intake of calcium glycerophosphate and local remodent application on 45Ca enamel incorporation and the depth of its penetration into the dental hard tissues. The treatment led to a substantial decrease in both enamel 45Ca accumulation and the depth of its penetration ...
