A Longitudinal Evaluation of Fissure Sealants Applied in Dental Practices
Journal of Dental Research, 1995Sealants are highly effective in preventing dental caries in the pits and fissures of teeth when applied by trained operators in clinical trials and public health programs. The effectiveness of fissure sealants when applied in dental practices is still not known.

Histochemical study of the formation of dental plaque in artificial fissures
European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1974abstract— The development of fissure plaque was studied in artificial fissures of Mylar® foil implanted in the occlusal surface of mandibular molars of 10 dental students for periods of 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, 30 and 60 d. After removal the fissures were processed for histologic and histochemical examination.

Fissure sealants and dental caries: a review
Journal of Dentistry, 1975Abstract Many different methods have been tried to modify the anatomical form of occlusal pits and fissures so as to prevent caries occurring in these sites. Early studies using silver nitrate, black copper cement and zinc ferrocyanide proved ineffective.

The sealing of fissures in a school dental programme
Australian Dental Journal, 1976Abstract— An examination was made of 817 children, mean age 6.9 years. Of their first permanent molars 42.4 per cent were assessed as suitable for fissure sealant. Of these teeth 522 were sealed and compared with contra‐lateral controls after one year. The retention rate of and the mean application time for the sealant are presented and discussed.

Fissure Sealants and Dental Enamel
Caries Research, 2009Microleakage of four pit and fissure sealants was studied using an artificial caries technique and polarized light microscopy. The results from the study indicated that ultraviolet light polymerized sealants had significantly fewer wall lesions than autopolymerized sealants.

Mechanical benefits of conservative restoration for dental fissure caries
Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, 2016The principle of minimal intervention dentistry (MID) is to limit removal of carious tooth tissue while maximizing its repair and survival potential. The objective of this study is to explore the fracture resistance of a permanent molar tooth with a fissure carious lesion along with three clinical restoration procedures, namely one traditional and two ...

Clinical significance of the length of the pterygopalatine fissure in dental anesthesia
Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, and Endodontology, 2001This study determined the average length of the pterygopalatine fissure by using human cadavers. Recommendations are made to improve the success of maxillary nerve block injections.Pterygopalatine fissures were dissected, exposing the maxillary nerve trunk in 47 human cadavers.

Prevention of Dental Caries by the Use of Pit-and-Fissure Sealants
Journal of Public Health Policy, 1987Dental sealants are plastic resins that are applied to caries-susceptible pit-and-fissured tooth surfaces to prevent decay. Although there has been an overall decline in caries prevalence among United States schoolchildren, there has been a relative increase in the proportion of carious lesions occurring on the pit-and-fissured surfaces.
