Advances in Dental Research, 1993Longitudinal studies have shown that successful implants are colonized by a predominantly Gram-positive, facultative flora, which is established shortly after implantation. Repeated microbiological sampling in patients with clinically stable implants showed no significant shifts in the composition of this flora over five years.

Photofunctionalization of Dental Implants
Journal of Oral Implantology, 2016After dental implants are manufactured there can be a loss of biological activity that may be reactivated by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, that is, photofunctionalization. The titanium surface is energy conditioned by UV radiation. This imparts a slight positive surface energy and hydrophilicity to the titanium dental implant surface.
