The assessment of jaw movement direction from dental microwear
American Journal of Physical Anthropology, 1984AbstractIn order to resolve several controversies about unusual jaw movements such as thegosis and orthal retraction, information about direction of jaw movement is essential. Ryan (1979a,b) proposed that asymmetry of microwear striations might provide such data.

Dental microwear. Morphological, functional and phylogenetic correlations.
Italian journal of anatomy and embryology = Archivio italiano di anatomia ed embriologia, 1998Dental wear, at first considered a pathological condition, is now regarded as a physiological mechanism of teeth adaptation to continuous masticatory stresses. Excessive wear is limited by characteristic structural adaptations of dental hard tissues showing a phylogenetic trend and specialisation.

Dental microwear and Paleoanthropology: Cautions and possibilities
2007Fifty years ago, investigators realized they could gain insights into jaw movement and tooth-use through light-microscope analyses of wear patterns on teeth. Since then, numerous analyses of modern and fossil material have yielded insights into the evolution of tooth use and diet in a wide variety of animals.
