Leucocyte function in denture stomatitis

Abstract As part of a wider series of experiments to study the aetiological significance in denture stomatitis, 30 patients and 30 age- and sex-matched controls were subjected to in vitro antigenic challenge. No abnormality of leucocyte transformation or migration-inhibition factor production could be demonstrated.

Glycaemic disorders in denture stomatitis

The prevalence of glycaemic disorders was investigated in native Upper‐Austrians with Candida‐associated denture stomatitis. All patients with previously unknown diabetes mellitus were subjected to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and as a result diabetes was diagnosed in 13% of the patients over 50 years of age.

Denture stomatitis in the elderly

A study was carried out of 121 elderly edentulous individuals living in institutionalised homes in the Lothian Region, Scotland to determine the prevalence of yeasts and associated oral disease. Clinical examinations found that 65(54%) of the individuals suffered from denture stomatitis, and yeasts were recovered from 51(78%) of these individuals.

The mycologic findings of Candida albicans or culturally similar yeasts in 70% of the subject sample is consistent with those of other researchers. It is, however, only one of several etiologic factors requiring concomitant study to obtain meaningful results.

Denture base materials of the past and present are reviewed. Hypersensitivity stomatitis venenata is an uncommon cause of "denture sore mouth." Four cases are cited in evidence that acrylic dentures, even when heat cured, can produce a hypersensitivity type of stomatitis venenata.
