Upscaling the effect of traits in response to drought: The relative importance of safety–efficiency and acquisitive–conservation functional axes

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 26, Issue 12, Page 2098-2109, December 2023., 2023
Our results demonstrated the complex pathways in which functional traits scale up from individuals to communities in species‐rich tropical forests. Abstract We tested the idea that functional trade‐offs that underlie species tolerance to drought drive shifts in community composition via their effects on demographic processes and subsequently on shifts ...

Could a trade agreement strengthen the enforcement of domestic environmental laws? Envisioning the impacts of the US–Peru environmental submissions mechanism

open access: yesReview of European, Comparative &International Environmental Law, Volume 32, Issue 3, Page 465-472, November 2023., 2023
Abstract Could a trade agreement strengthen the enforcement of domestic environmental laws? This article explores this question in the context of the US–Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (TPA). The article examines, in particular, the potential role of the Secretariat for Submissions on Environmental Enforcement Matters (SEEM) of the TPA.

Wildlife as sentinels of compliance with law: An example with GPS‐tagged scavengers and sanitary regulations

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 10, Page 2188-2198, October 2023., 2023
GPS‐tagged scavengers allow the on‐ground monitoring of carcasses, the addressing of potential risks for wildlife, livestock and human health, the quantitative assessment of compliance with the law and would improve estimates of carcass availability, substantially contributing to more effective legislation enforcement.

Agrarian change through speculation: Rural elites as land brokers for mining in Colombia

open access: yesJournal of Agrarian Change, Volume 23, Issue 4, Page 706-728, October 2023., 2023
Abstract This paper studies the connections between the expansion of mining capital, speculative forms of land grabbing and agrarian transformation. It is argued that in periods of commodity boom, the landowning rural elite benefits from mining through speculative land deals with mining companies.

Geographic patterns of tree dispersal modes in Amazonia and their ecological correlates

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 32, Issue 1, Page 49-69, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Aim To investigate the geographic patterns and ecological correlates in the geographic distribution of the most common tree dispersal modes in Amazonia (endozoochory, synzoochory, anemochory and hydrochory). We examined if the proportional abundance of these dispersal modes could be explained by the availability of dispersal agents (disperser ...

Foraging strategies, craniodental traits, and interaction in the bite force of Neotropical frugivorous bats (Phyllostomidae: Stenodermatinae)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 20, Page 13756-13772, October 2021., 2021
Abstract Bats in the family Phyllostomidae exhibit great diversity in skull size and morphology that reflects the degree of resource division and ecological overlap in the group. In particular, the subfamily Stenodermatinae has high morphological diversification associated with cranial and mandibular traits that are associated with the ability to ...

Deciphering the diet of a wandering spider (Phoneutria boliviensis; Araneae: Ctenidae) by DNA metabarcoding of gut contents

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 11, Issue 11, Page 5950-5965, June 2021., 2021
Arachnids are the most abundant land predators. Despite the importance of their functional roles as predators and the of necessity to understand their diet for conservation and nutrient fluxes, there is a small amount of work on trophic ecology in this group of arachnids.

Antioxidant activity of exo‐metabolites produced by Fusarium oxysporum: An endophytic fungus isolated from leaves of Otoba gracilipes

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 8, Issue 10, October 2019., 2019
An endophytic fungus isolated from the leaves of Otoba gracilipes, a poorly explored medicinal plant from tropical rainforest in Colombia, was cultivated, and its extracellular crude extract was evaluated for antioxidant activity. Using traditional and molecular methods of characterization (ITS1, NL1 regions), the endophyte was identified as Fusarium ...

Preliminary Evaluation of the Safety and Immunogenicity of an Antimalarial Vaccine Candidate Modified Peptide (IMPIPS) Mixture in a Murine Model

open access: yesJournal of Immunology Research, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
Malaria continues being a high‐impact disease regarding public health worldwide; the WHO report for malaria in 2018 estimated that ~219 million cases occurred in 2017, mostly caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The disease cost the lives of more than 400,000 people, mainly in Africa.

Patterns of Z chromosome divergence among Heliconius species highlight the importance of historical demography

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 27, Issue 19, Page 3852-3872, October 2018., 2018
Abstract Sex chromosomes are disproportionately involved in reproductive isolation and adaptation. In support of such a “large‐X” effect, genome scans between recently diverged populations and species pairs often identify distinct patterns of divergence on the sex chromosome compared to autosomes.
