Propoxyphene Dependence: Problems in Management
Southern Medical Journal, 1984Propoxyphene dependence presents a difficult treatment problem: the patients' subjective discomfort and concomitant craving during gradual withdrawal of the drug is more intense and more poorly tolerated than that observed with other narcotic analgesic agents. Of the six patients we describe, only one has achieved successful detoxification.

This chapter is devoted to the approximation of time-dependent PDEs by finite elements. An exhaustive review of this vast subject goes beyond the scope of this book; therefore, we restrict ourselves to illustrating some important concepts. In particular, we emphasize the method of lines where the problem is first approximated in space, yielding a ...

On Markov-dependent parking problems
Journal of Applied Probability, 2004We drive a car along a street towards our destination and look for an available parking place without turning around. Each parking place is associated with a loss which decreases with the distance of the parking place from our destination. Assume that the states (empty or filled) of the parking places form a Markov chain.

Abstract In this chapter we illustrate how the domain decomposition techniques that have been presented so far can be applied in the process of solving time-dependent problems. As usual we assume that ℒ is a bounded domain in Rd, d = 2, 3, with a Lipschitz boundary.

Abstract In this final chapter on the finite element method (FEM) we consider the essential features of modeling the time evolution of a quantum mechanical system. This problem has been investigated theoretically and numerically with great intensity over the past several decades, and deserves, at the very least, a separate volume to ...

Important advances have recently been made in the solution of time dependent problems using boundary elements. Some of the resulting papers have been published in the proceedings of the latest Boundary Element Conferences (C.A. Brebbia, 1981, 1982, 1983); while more definite work appeared as chapters in the Progress on Boundary Element Methods Series ...

Conceptual problems in dependency research
Social Science & Medicine, 1987The problems presented by dependency groups have become a key issue for health care and social policy in all advanced countries. Providers and policy makers have looked to researchers to develop and apply measures of dependency which will provide a basis for rational planning and service provision. Attempts to define and classify dependency are notable

Time Dependent Free Boundary Problems
SIAM Review, 1979Recent results on the existence and continuity of solutions, and on the shape and smoothness of the free boundary are described for the following problems: (a) the flow of liquid in a dam with time...
