Assembly of female and male hihi genomes (stitchbird; Notiomystis cincta) enables characterization of the W chromosome and resources for conservation genomics

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 5, July 2025.
Abstract A high‐quality reference genome can be a valuable resource for threatened species by providing a foundation to assess their evolutionary potential to adapt to future pressures such as environmental change. We assembled the genome of a female hihi (Notiomysits cincta), a threatened passerine bird endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand.

Inefficient Melt Transport Across a Weakened Lithosphere Led to Anomalous Rift Architecture in the Turkana Depression

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 11, 16 June 2025.
Abstract The Turkana Depression, located between the Ethiopian and East African plateaus, displays an anomalous rift architecture. It is missing the narrow, magma‐rich morphology observed in the Main Ethiopian Rift that cuts through the Ethiopian Plateau.

Zinc‐Doping‐Induced Electronic States Modulation of Molybdenum Carbide: Expediting Rate‐Determining Steps of Sulfur Conversion in Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 22, June 12, 2025.
Zn‐doped molybdenum carbide microflowers (Zn‐Mo2C) are exploited as a sulfur host for Li–S batteries. Zn doping elevates the d‐band center on Mo, enhancing LiPSs anchoring, weakening S─S/Li─S bonds, and reducing Li2S2→Li2S conversion energy barrier from 0.52 to 0.05 eV.

Hydrological Effects of the Westward Expansion of Mediterranean Climate and Revegetation in Atlantic–Mediterranean Transitional Headwaters

open access: yesHydrological Processes, Volume 39, Issue 6, June 2025.
Six Spanish mid‐mountain catchments in a transitional Atlantic–Mediterranean ecotone reveal a westward expansion of Mediterranean climate: reduced spring precipitation in historically Atlantic catchments and increased autumn rainfall, coupled with rising temperatures and widespread greening.

An Overview of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Groundwater Resources [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Climate change has been consistently observed over the past decades to be associated with changes and/or modifications of components of the hydrological systems.

Relative risk of waterbird species on the Berkeley Pit: a mortality assessment of 18 taxa

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, Volume 49, Issue 2, June 2025.
Our work examines 18 avian taxa observed on the Berkley Pit with at least 1 known mortality. The Berkeley Pit, in Butte, Montana, is a pit lake and likely one of the most intensively monitored waterbodies. The unique geochemistry and extensive size of the Pit, in addition to its geographic location along overlap of the Pacific and Central Flyways, make

Airborne and Spaceborne Mapping and Analysis of the Subglacial Lake D2 in David Glacier, Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, Volume 130, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract During the 2018–2019 Antarctic summer, the Korea Polar Research Institute and the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics collaborated on a helicopter‐based ice‐penetrating radar (IPR) survey over the active subglacial lake D2 (SLD2), located in the midstream of the David Glacier, Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica.
