Depth reconstruction filter for depth coding [PDF]
Depth images represent the distances of scene elements from a camera in 3D space; their efficient coding is crucial for emerging applications such as free-viewpoint TV and 3D video. An in-loop reconstruction filter that improves the depth-coding performance as well as the rendering quality of virtual views based upon the coded depth is proposed.

Coding Depth through Mask Structure [PDF]
AbstractWe present a coded‐aperture method based on a family of masks obtained as the convolution of one “hole” with a structural component consisting of an arrangement of Dirac delta functions. We call the arrangement of delta functions the structural component of the mask, and use it to efficiently encode scene distance information. We illustrate the

Near-Optimal Depth-Constrained Codes [PDF]
This note considers an n-letter alphabet in which the ith letter is accessed with probability p/sub i/. The problem is to design efficient algorithms for constructing near-optimal, depth-constrained Huffman and alphabetic codes. We recast the problem as one of determining a probability vector q/sup */=(q/sup *//sub 1/,...,q/sup *//sub n/) in an ...

Multiview depth coding based on combined color/depth segmentation [PDF]
In this paper, a new coding method for multiview depth video is presented. Considering the smooth structure and sharp edges of depth maps, a segmentation based approach is proposed. This allows further preserving the depth contours thus introducing fewer artifacts in the depth perception of the video.

Fusion of colour and depth partitions for depth map coding
3D video coding includes the use of multiple color views and depth maps associated to each view. An adequate coding of depth maps should be adapted to the characteristics of depth maps: smooth regions and sharp edges. In this paper a segmentation-based technique is proposed for improving the depth map compression while preserving the main ...

On decision depths for partial response codes
The decision depth L/sub d/ for finite and infinite partial response signaling (PRS) schemes is investigated. New measures are proposed that take into account error event multiplicity. We conclude that small to moderate decoder decision depths achieve performance near MLSE even for near catastrophic codes.

Depth and depth–color coding using shape-adaptive wavelets [PDF]
We present a novel depth and depth-color codec aimed at free-viewpoint 3D-TV. The proposed codec uses a shape-adaptive wavelet transform and an explicit encoding of the locations of major depth edges. Unlike the standard wavelet transform, the shape-adaptive transform generates small wavelet coefficients along depth edges, which greatly reduces the ...

Wyner-ziv coding for depth maps in multiview video-plus-depth [PDF]
Three dimensional digital video services are gathering a lot of attention in recent years, thanks to the introduction of new and efficient acquisition and rendering devices. In particular, 3D video is often represented by a single view and a so called depth map, which gives information about the distance between the point of view and the objects.

Improved depth coding for HEVC focusing on depth edge approximation
Abstract The latest High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard has greatly improved the coding efficiency compared to its predecessor H.264. An important share of which is the adoption of hierarchical block partitioning structures and an extended number of modes.

Depth Map Coding Method for Scalable Video Plus Depth [PDF]
Depth map coding along with its associated texture video plays an important role in the display of 3D scene by Depth Image Based Rendering technique. In this paper, the inter-layer motion prediction in Scalable Video Coding is applied in order to utilize the similarity of the motion data between texture video and its associated depth map. Additionally,
