Investigating the Use of Terrain‐Following Coordinates in AI‐Driven Precipitation Forecasts

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 20, 28 October 2025.
Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) weather prediction (AIWP) models often produce “blurry” precipitation forecasts. This study presents a novel solution to tackle this problem—integrating terrain‐following coordinates into AIWP models. Forecast experiments are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of terrain‐following coordinates using FuXi, an ...

Direct Radiation Belt Injections and Their Auroral Counterparts

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 19, 16 October 2025.
Abstract We present a case study of a moderate geomagnetic storm, which exhibits an abrupt relativistic enhancement in the heart of the radiation belt accompanied by low‐latitude purple auroral emission. The relativistic enhancement occurs on a timescale of tens of minutes and reaches MeV energies deep within the inner magnetosphere. The enhancement is

ColdBlobMIP: A Multi‐Model Assessment of the Atmospheric Response to the North Atlantic Warming Hole

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 52, Issue 19, 16 October 2025.
Abstract Observations of sea surface temperature reveal a region of relative cooling in the subpolar North Atlantic commonly known as the North Atlantic warming hole (NAWH) or “cold blob.” While the origin of the NAWH has been extensively debated, its direct impact on the atmosphere has only recently garnered attention. Here, we present ColdBlobMIP, an

The Impact of CO2‐Driven Vegetation Changes on the Future of Flash Drought in the Northern Hemisphere

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 130, Issue 19, 16 October 2025.
Abstract Vegetation plays a crucial role in soil moisture regulation and the development of rapid‐onset droughts known as flash droughts. We use climate model experiments with the Community Earth System Model (CESM2) to examine how the vegetation response to rising CO2 impacts projections of future flash drought in the Northern Hemisphere mid‐latitudes.

A study of the 23 October 2022 southern England damaging MCS

open access: yesWeather, Volume 80, Issue 10, Page 324-334, October 2025.
During the afternoon of 23 October 2022, a mesoscale convective system (MCS) developed and intensified over the English Channel and tracked north‐northeastward into southern England, producing widespread damaging winds and at least three moderate to strong tornadoes in Hampshire.
