DNA barcoding identification of Dermestidae species

Mitochondrial DNA Part A, 2015
Dermestidae species are important stored product insects. The traditional morphological identification has its limitation. The purpose of the study is to explore the effectiveness of identification by DNA barcoding technology in Dermestidae. The COI gene sequences of 39 samples from 17 species of Dermestidae were analyzed, and we evaluated the ...

What’s Eating You? Carpet Beetles (Dermestidae)

Cutis
Carpet beetle larvae of the family Dermestidae have been documented to cause both acute and delayed hypersensitivity reactions in susceptible individuals. These larvae have specialized horizontal rows of spear-shaped hairs called hastisetae, which detach easily into the surrounding environment and are small enough to travel by air.

Purines in the Excreta ofDermestes maculatus(Coleoptera: Dermestidae)

Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 1970
Uric acid appears to be the principal purine excretory product of the majority of insect species so far studied (Wigglesworth 1953). Purines other than uric acid have not often been found. Hypoxanthine has been reported to be a minor component of the excreta of the larvae and adults of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L.) (Nation and Patton ...

Selection of Fats by Dermestid Beetles, Dermestidae

Journal of Mammalogy, 1956
Populations of dermestid beetles generally thrive on fatty meats and do poorly on diets low in fats. The animals apparently require lipids to remain healthy, to complete their life cycle in optimum time, and to produce large broods. The larvae of Attagenus piceus develop faster and have a lower mortality on a diet that includes fish meal than on one ...
