Global phylogeography of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
Journal of Zoology, 1999AbstractAnalyses of mitochondrial (mt) DNA control region sequences from 175 leatherback turtlesDermochelys coriaceafrom 10 nesting colonies revealed shallow phylogenetic structuring of maternal lineages on a global scale. Eleven haplotypes were observed, and mean estimated sequence divergence,p= 0.00581, is much lower than the deepest nodes reported ...

Field anaesthesia of leatherback sea turtles ( Dermochelys coriacea )
Veterinary Record, 2007Ten nesting leatherback sea turtles on Trinidad were anaesthetised for electroretinogram ( erg ) measurements, using ketamine and medetomidine, reversed with atipamezole. They weighed 242 to 324 kg and were given initial doses of 3 to 8 mg/kg ketamine and 30 to 80 μg/kg medetomidine ...

Ocular morphology of the Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
Veterinary Ophthalmology, 2008AbstractObjective The Leatherback sea turtle is the largest extant reptile and the sole member of the family Dermochelyidae. Here, the eye of this critically endangered marine turtle was investigated to determine the anatomy, optics, and optical sensitivity.Animals studied Three Leatherback sea turtles, Dermochelys coriacea. Results The eye is small ...

Solitary Large Intestinal Diverticulitis in Leatherback Turtles (Dermochelys coriacea)
Veterinary Pathology, 2014Leatherback sea turtles are globally distributed and endangered throughout their range. There are limited data available on disease in this species. Initial observations of solitary large intestinal diverticulitis in multiple leatherbacks led to a multi-institutional review of cases.

Vibrio damsela Infection in a Stranded Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1987Necropsy of a stranded adult leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) determined that the animal died as a result of valvular endocarditis and septicemia. Vibrio damsela was isolated from the endocardial thrombus. The route of entry for infection probably was through the gastrointestinal tract.

Semantics and the Leathery Turtle, Dermochelys coriacea
Journal of Herpetology, 1987Ever since Blainville (1816) used the generic term "Dermochelys" for the leathery turtle, several basic morphological facets of this animal have been obscured by redundant, exaggerated, or inaccurate descriptions. This results in unnecessary confusion and misunderstandings about ontogenetic and evolutionary features in Dermochelys coriacea.

Further Observations on Breeding of Dermochelys coriacea in Australia
Wildlife Research, 1984In Australia, breeding of the cosmopolitan leatherback turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, is concentrated on 22.3 km of beach near Wreck Rock (24°19'S., 151°58'E.) in south-east Queensland. Up to three females nest there in most years. The mean size of 14 clutches was 82.79; the mean hatching success was 15.3% for clutches on the beach and 51.8% for these ...
