When tradition burns: Misinterpreting prescribed fire across the science–society gap in Iberia

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 3, July–September 2026.
Prescribed fire is a scientifically grounded management tool whose benefits depend on specific ecological and operational conditions. This Perspective examines how these benefits may be reinterpreted beyond their original context and proposes a framework to improve the translation of ecological knowledge into environmental decision‐making.

Citizen‐Science Camera Trap Data Reveal Large‐Scale Activity Patterns of the Bobcat (Lynx rufus) Across Mexican Ecosystems

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, July 2026.
We evaluated whether citizen science–derived camera‐trap records can be used to characterize large‐scale activity patterns of a widely distributed mesocarnivore across heterogeneous landscapes. Using 821 independent iNaturalist records, we quantified activity across six major vegetation types in Mexico with kernel density estimation, circular ...

Extensive but fragmented evidence limits understanding of factors shaping farmers' decisions regarding diversified farming systems: A global evidence map

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 7, Page 2212-2232, July 2026.
Abstract Diversified farming systems are increasingly recognised for their potential to enhance the sustainability and resilience of food systems. Yet it remains unclear whether empirical research adequately captures the drivers and constraints shaping farmers' decisions regarding diversified farming systems across stages of decision‐making ...

The importance of integrating herbarium records into conservation plans: a case study on Honduran ferns and lycophytes

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 4, Page 1238-1255, July 2026.
Herbarium collections are powerful, yet underutilized, tools for global biodiversity conservation and protected area management. By integrating digitized herbarium records with existing biodiversity data, previously unknown plant species were uncovered, exposing critical gaps in conservation knowledge.

Horizontal Gene Transfer and Genome Rearrangements Shape Bacterial Adaptation for Bioremediation

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 7, July 2026.
Exposure to xenobiotics triggers genome evolution and horizontal gene transfer (HGT), driving the acquisition of novel catabolic functions. These genomic adaptations provide a competitive fitness advantage that reshapes microbial community structure and enhances biodegradation impact.

Spatial Variation of Acidic Sodic Soils in High‐Andean Environments and Theoretical Estimation of Gypsum Requirement

open access: yesSoil Use and Management, Volume 42, Issue 3, July‐September 2026.
ABSTRACT High‐Andean forage systems are characterized by extensive management of cultivated forages, primarily through rotation of forage oats (Avena sativa) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa), under marginal edaphoclimatic conditions. Within this context, soil sodicity severely constrains the productivity of these systems in the districts of Ayaviri and ...

Morphological, Culinary, and Nutritional Diversity of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) Accessions in the Northern Andean Region of Peru

open access: yesLegume Science, Volume 8, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grains represent a major source of plant‐based protein and essential micronutrients; however, their consumption is constrained by prolonged cooking times and variable nutritional profiles. This study characterized the morphological, culinary, and nutritional diversity of 36 common bean accessions collected ...

A thermostable laccase from Thermus sp. 2.9 and its potential for delignification of Eucalyptus biomass

open access: yesAMB Express, 2019
Laccases are multicopper oxidases that are being studied for their potential application in pretreatment strategies of lignocellulosic feedstocks for bioethanol production. Here, we report the expression and characterization of a predicted laccase (LAC_2.
