Vertical thermal structure of the Venus atmosphere from temperature and pressure measurements [PDF]
Accurate temperature and pressure measurements were made on the Vega-2 lander during its entire descent. The temperature and pressure at the surface were 733 K and 89.3 bar, respectively. A strong temperature inversion was found in the upper troposphere.

A fixed-base simulation study of two STOL aircraft flying curved, descending instrument approach paths [PDF]
A real-time, fixed-base simulation study has been conducted to determine the curved, descending approach paths (within passenger-comfort limits) that would be acceptable to pilots, the flight-director-system logic requirements for curved-flight-path ...

Simulations and Experiments of Photon Doppler Velocimetry Diagnosed Wedge Tests
Monitoring wedge test by PDV ABSTRACT High explosive wedge tests were fielded with photon Doppler velocimetry (PDV) to measure the shock‐to‐detonation transition and shock Hugoniot of a cast‐cure explosive. To reduce facility costs and accelerate testing, wedge tests were initiated with three‐dimensional (3D)‐printed Fritz‐plane wave lenses rather than

Metallized Propellants for the Human Exploration of Mars [PDF]
Advanced chemical propulsion using Metallized Propellants (MP) can lead to significant reductions in launch mass for piloted Mars missions. MP allow the propellant density or the specific impulse I(sub sp) of the propulsion system, or both, to increase ...

Fractal Scaling of Explosively Driven Product Gases
The expanding interface between explosive product gases and ambient air is characterized as a function of time by the fractal dimension of the interface which is extracted from high‐speed image sequences. The interface is observed to increase in fractal dimension, and thus complexity, as time from detonation progresses.

Brain mechanisms of automated conflict avoidance simulator supervision
Abstract Supervision of automated systems is an ubiquitous aspect of most of our everyday life activities which is even more necessary in high risk industries (aeronautics, power plants, etc.). Performance monitoring related to our own error making has been widely studied.
