Quantitative Technology Assessment in Space Mission Analysis [PDF]

open access: yes
New technologies will need to be developed to create feasible concepts for NASA's ambitious missions of the future, but quantitative assessments of the impacts that technologies have on systems or architectures are sporadic and often inadequate.

Modelling migratory waterfowl stopover habitat while accounting for ephemeral environmental conditions

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, EarlyView.
We demonstrated the potential of phenological synchronization to estimate fine‐scale ephemeral environmental conditions crucial for migratory species. Modelled habitats revealed key stopover sites in both natural and agricultural landscapes. The maps showed gaps in the protected area network of Eurasian grasslands, especially in agriculture.

Density‐dependent growth and dispersal can accurately forecast near‐term range shifts in a dominant dryland tree species

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, EarlyView.
We found that the inclusion of external drivers such as climate conditions or topography generally did not improve forecast accuracy and that at multidecadal time scales, intrinsic population processes (density‐dependent growth and dispersal dynamics) can accurately predict shifting abundances along a historical range margin.
