Biosolids in a Chihuahuan Desert Ecosystem [PDF]

open access: yesRangelands, 2003
Biosolids, formerly called "sewage sludge," are a byproduct of waste water treatment. The U.S. produced 7.6 million tons of biosolids in 1998, and annual biosolids production is expected to increase to 9 million tons by 20 10. Land-based disposal methods include incineration, land-filling, pelletization, composting, and land application.

Artificial Symbiosis for Bulk Production of Bacterial Cellulose Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Co‐cultivation of the cellulose‐producing bacterium with the microalga enables bulk formation of bacterial cellulose under static incubation, with photosynthetically active oxygen‐generating sites throughout the medium. This symbiotic platform supports 3D cellulosic constructs with geometries dictated by the vessel shape.

Stochastic Desertification

open access: yes, 2013
The process of desertification is usually modeled as a first order transition, where a change of an external parameter (e.g. precipitation) leads to a catastrophic bifurcation followed by an ecological regime shift.

Ecology of endolithic lichens colonizing granite in continental Antarctica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
In this study, the symbiont cells of several endolithic lichens colonizing granite in continental Antarctica and the relationships they have with the abiotic environment were analyzed in situ, in order to characterize the microecosystems integrating ...

Integrated Lead/Iodine Management for Sustainable Perovskite Solar Modules

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Perovskite solar modules face environmental risks from lead and iodine leakage. A dual‐function adsorbent—porphyrin‐modified whitlockite nanocomposites—effectively captures iodine and Pb2+, even under severe damage. Combined with a semi‐closed recycling process, it recovers 96.9% high‐purity PbI2 and reduces residual Pb2+ to <10 ppb, offering an ...
