The content of this paper is significant because it presents the first comprehensive assessment of the dendroflora of the Fergana Valley, contributes to understanding species richness across biogeographic regions, and places the results in the context of Central Asian flora and global biodiversity studies.

Radiation measurements from polar and geosynchronous satellites [PDF]
Nimbus 5 satellite data and its use to study climate and develop climate model experiments are examined. Data cover: (1) physical basis for understanding long range and climate monitoring and prediction problem, (2) delineating energy loss to space ...

The relationships between structure and function of plant communities in the desert steppe
Assessing the relationships between spatial and temporal structures and functions of plant communities is an effective way to understand the changing dynamics of plant communities in specific environments. In this study, we investigated the response of structural and functional stabilities of plant communities to stocking rate in the desert steppe over

Patterns of River Flow Regulation Across the World's Climate Regions
We quantify the Impoundment Ratio (IR) for 16 060 dams worldwide to assess how reservoir capacity relative to natural runoff varies across climate regions. One‐third of dams have IR ≥ 1, with the highest values in arid and semi‐arid zones and clear national contrasts within similar climates.

Tribes, state, and technology adoption in arid land management, Syria: [PDF]
Arid shrub-lands in Syria and elsewhere in West Asia and North Africa are widely thought degraded. Characteristic of these areas is a preponderance of unpalatable shrubs or a lack of overall ground cover with a rise in the associated risks of soil ...

Pollen analysis of core DS7-1SC (Dead Sea) showing intertwined effects of climatic change and human activities in the Late Holocene [PDF]
The Dead Sea sediment holds the archives of a complex relationship between ever-changing nature and ancient civilisations. Here the detailed pollen analyses of core DS7-1SC (off-Ein-Gedi) are presented for the first time.

Dog attacks on wild desert tortoises: A risk model
Domestic dogs attack and severely injure wild desert tortoises at the urban and ex‐urban interface with deserts. Severe trauma to tortoises increased 4 times to shell and limbs and 16.5 times to the gular horn over the decades between the 1970s and 2000s. Tortoises were at exponential risk of severe trauma when living within 12 km of settlements, towns,

Seasonal grazing on the characteristic of plant communities in the desert steppe
To explore the impact of seasonal rotational grazing on the plant community characteristics of desert grassland, this study took the desert grassland of Yanchi County, Ningxia, as the research object and enclosed grassland (FY) as the control. Four warm-seasons four area rotational grazing methods were set, including traditional time grazing (FG ...

Changing Regional Land Surface Albedos Alter the Planetary Albedo During the Twenty‐First Century
Abstract The top‐of‐atmosphere (TOA) albedo controls the amount of solar energy absorbed by Earth and is influenced by the reflectivity of both the atmosphere and surface. With considerable changes in land use over the past few decades it is reasonable to question whether a perturbed surface albedo has influenced TOA albedo over the corresponding ...
